  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

The sunroof on my 2009 Genesis got stuck open. $150 later, the tech was able to get it closed.
Fixing it would be a waste of money on a car this old. Total quoted was $1200. $300 for parts and 6 hours at $150 per.
I want to disable the sunroof so someone doesn't accidentally open it.
Pulling the fuse is not an option as it would also disable interior lights. So I guess it's an option, but I'd rather avoid it.
Any easy way to disable the switch itself?
Any other options you guys can think of?

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
I guess it is too late to ask the Hyundai tech who closed it? Maybe he could have snipped the wires to the motor.

I have never used the sunroof(s) on any car because:

1. Why use it?

2 More importantly they are nothing but hassle

That's was one of the big selling points of the Genesis to me. It was probably the nicest car I could find that could be purchased without a sunroof (Base Trim). A big reason for me is a loss of headroom with the sunroof (1" on average depending on the car).

IMO the easiest way without a fuse pull: Open up the housing that holds the switch. Pull the power lead from the switch.

There should be a relay responsible for the sun roof motor, unplugging that would disable operation. If you have a service manual you could look it up or ask your dealer where it is.
I don't know how many people drive your car but in my house it's my wife and all I would need to say is don't use the sun roof.
Put a piece of tape over the switch as a reminder, problem solved.

Pulling the relay or unplugging the switch are the 2 easiest ways to disable it, so those suggestions are my vote.

But.. on that question of other people riding in your car. If you have a wife/girlfriend, that's only 1 person you need to say "hey don't open the sunroof, it's broken". Why is any other passenger touching your switches?

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll look into that.
I've got tape on it, but multiple people in my family drive it, and I just don't want a lapse in memory to cost me another $150 to get it closed again.

Unplug the motor. The roof console is held by two screws accessible from the sunglass holder.
Remove the screws, pull the console, unplug it, then remove the three screws securing the motor and unplug the connector.

Perhaps the real question show be how to sue the manufacturer's for junking up these cars to boost the prices.

I've never opened the sunroofs on either of my cars. Have had no probs. except when a hailstorm bashed the Genesis sunroof to smithereens.

Maybe in 20 years, technology will evolve so that a sunroof can be effected with solid state technology in the same fashion that LED's are replacing old fashioned light bulbs.
But right now, they are mechanical monstrosities.

can you point me to the 2009 Service manual? I cannot locate it with a search. I have the version with the bluetooth module instead of the sunglass holder, so need the instructions for that.
Thanks for your help - this seems to be the best solution.

Sent a copy of the 2009 3.8 service manual to your PM box. Didn't look to see if it had the sunroof info you needed but it probably does. Good luck with your fix.

Got it, but didn't see the sunroof version I have. Just had the one with the sunglass holder but I need the one with the blue tooth module. I didn't see it in the manual but have not had the time to spend much time looking. Thanks though!

Any chance I could have a copy of that 2009 3.8 service manual?

This somewhat of a useless reply as it does nothing to assist the OP with his problem. SMH...
