In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Does anybody know the thread length on the stock spark plugs to be 3/4" or 1" in length?

I looked in the manual and all it says was that they are iridium coated?

Thanks

Or better yet the ngk part# would be helpful as well if anybody knows?

Thanks

Not sure about NGK. You may want to call your parts guy at the local Hyundai dealership.

100k miles or 10 years. Plugs are so easy to change on this car and so cheap keeping them in that long seems a bit long.

Thanks for the info. I thought I heard that they were NGK? Oh well I guess it really doesn't matter whether or not they are NGK or Denso.

I talked to the guy at my local hyundai parts dept. He said he showed 2 different types of plugs used in the Genesis. The last 8 of my VIN showed that my particular plug was for engines produced between 5/08 to 3/17/09.

He said that maybe hyundai switched manufacturers at that point and used a different brand for the plugs? He wasn't to sure. He said that the specs should be the same as far as the heat range of the plug. He measured one plug he had in stock that didn't match my particular VIN and said the thread length was 1" so I'm guessing that's the correct length. I just don't know exactly which manufacturer of the plug in my car is? Denso, NGK, Champion?

I know the manual says that they are iridium coated and last up to 100k, but also says under severe operating conditions to replace earlier? I doesn't specify what earlier may mean?

I don't have that many miles on my car at all I just purchased it about 3 weeks ago, but I'm doing research for the future if I decide to use different plugs or stick with the stock plugs.

I see that you mentioned that the plugs are easy to change on this particular motor? Hmmm I read a thread about the 3.8 spark plug change and think someone said that they have the labor at 3-4 hours at the dealership because you have to remove something?? I don't remember off the top of my head, but that was the reason why it would be a $3-400 job at the dealership! I hope that's not the case and it is easy to replace the plugs as it will save me some $$ down the road.

Anybody out there that have some miles on their Genesis and have changed their plugs yet?

Sorry if I wasn't clear. The V8 is much easier to change the plugs because the air intake is not covering the passenger side cylinder bay. The V6 takes more work, because you have to undo the surge tank that sits on top of the intake manifold and undo some vacuum lines. It's not hard, but it is time consuming. For someone with decent repair skill, this is an easy job. If this is your first time doing it, not so much.

The driver's side cylinder bay is exposed so changing the plugs on that side is a breeze.

Cool thanks for the clarification! Well maybe I'll tackle it with somebodys help who is familiar with the 3.8 L motor down the road.

Since this relates directly to the 3.8 V6 in the Genesis Sedan, I'm moving this discussion to it's proper location. Please be sure to start new topics in the proper section.

Thank you...

Thanks for that info I'm sure that will come in handy!

Question for you do you know the diameter of the thread on the plugs? Are they 14mm or 12mm wide?

I was looking at some aftermarket plugs and doing research but ran across some conflicting sizes on the thread width? I know they are 1" in length or 26.5mm reach but looks like there are plugs out there that fit that length but the width varies from 12mm to 14mm wide?

Can you help me with this one?

One more are the plugs the same size in the coupe 3.8 as the sedan 3.8?

Thanks

They are 12mm. Spark plugs for the V6's are the same in both the coupe and sedan. The V8's have the different spark plugs.

Thank You that was the info I was looking for!

Your right I guess that plug is only available from Hyundai?

The company I talked to said that the 12 mm plug was a newer plug being used by some manufacturers like Nissan and I guess hyundai too?

They said that aftermarket plugs won't go into production until later this year I guess?

Do you know why hyundai would go with a 12 mm plug? As opposed to the 14mm which is more common? Just curious?

You seem to know a lot about these motors

Thanks

Haha. Well...I wouldn't say a lot. But we're developing a turbo kit for the V6 coupe which should transfer over to the Sedan. We're fine tuning it and are already seeing + ~100+hp/100+tq. So we've been dealing/researching on this motor for a little while now.

For the plug diameter, I just took one off the shelf and measured it with the micrometer. Came up to be 11.77mm. :D That, and I have access to the service manual that our dealerships have. (Which by the way...is wrong half the time. So it's not your technicians fault that they can't fix your car. Most of the wire colors that we've been searching for have been incorrect.)

To answer your question, I have no clue why they switched to a 12mm plug. We could question that all day - materials? waste? less resistance, therefore quicker fire? Who knows. Whatever it is, manufacturers are making everything in the aftermarket world more difficult. I'm sure an aftermarket company will come out with something soon, but they're so vehicle specific now, I don't expect the pricing to be that much different.

Cool, thanks for the information/responses.

A turbo kit? Nice!! When is the expected release date for the kit?

Approximation of the cost and complexity of the kit?

That would be a trip to have a turbo on the sedan!

What boost levels are you guys talking about here? Intercooler and the whole works?

Sorry about the 20 questions, just peaked my interest when you said that.

We've ran into several snags on it. 1 being keeping piping down with the weird maf tube. Release was projected for this spring but I've been so covered I'm having to put it on the backburner a bit.

The power gains were seen at 7psi. We hope to see 400whp with 10psi. We're still searching for a piggyback system to hold our mapping so pricing hasn't been determined yet. It's a rear mounted turbo so the intercooler would be an additional option. If you click on the coupe (red lettering) in my signature it'll take you to the cardomain page with pics.

Cool I'll check it out!

By chance are you going to develop a cai for the sedan?

I know there aren't any available as of now for the sedan.

I've thought about it. :D Maybe. Time has not been on my side lately.

Cool if you do maybe you can put together a group buy on this forum if so?

Maybe wishful thinking as of this point in time, but you can wish right?

Great when you're done with the V6 turbo, can you get started on the V8 turbo? Thanks! ;)
