  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Anyone else having recurring CEL (Check Engine Light) problems?

I have a 2011 3.8 Prem/Tech with 12k miles and the darn thing keeps coming on. The dealer reset it 3 times now and this last time gave me a can of MOA to put in with my oil, hoping it might "clean the screens" on the sensors (which I found out requires half of my engine to be removed if they have to physically clean/check/replace them).

. . . never been a fan of using additives (especially in my Mobil 1), but if it keeps them from performing major surgery on my engine . . .

None here. Do you have oem stock engine air filter and no modificaations to ecm or other componets?

What is the error code? Same each time or not?

Cleaning screens sounds odd to me. Issues with the oil area generally don't affect emissions which is what the OBD-II stuff monitors. Of course auto makers add their own codes to the mandated list... so perhaps your car is spitting up something unique to Hyundai that is oil related? Need to know the codes!

The one time my 2009 V8 tossed a code was for a camshaft position sensor... the electrical connector at the top/rear of the passenger side cylinder head was not fully seated it turns out. Based on other problems noted in this forum, sloppily plugged in electrical connectors seems to be a frequent manufacturing issue for the Genesis. So maybe just making sure everything is fully plugged in under the hood will fix your car. After 3 short drives, if that was the problem, the CEL should go out if you've fixed it. Most non-critical CEL codes can be self-cleared after 3 "cycles" once the problem is fixed... like my loose camshaft position sensor connector.

Everything (air filter, etc) is stock on the car. I changed oil (myself) at 3k, using a Wix filter and Mobil 1. Four months later the CEL sporadically came on and continued that way for four months, at which time it eventually became constant. I changed oil again (Wix/Mobil 1) at 10k. Took it to dealer, they scanned it and reported (quote from repair ticket):

CUSTOMER STATES CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON CONFIRMED. I SCANED VEHICLE FOR CODES AND IT HAD A P0025- "B " CAMSHAFT POSITION-TIMING OVER RETARDED ( BANK 2) HYSTORY CODE. I ERASED THE CODE AND CODE DID NOT COME BACK ON. WITHOUT CODE BEING ACTIVE NO FUTHER REPAIRS ARE NEEDED

So they told me they couldn't do anything and to come back when it lights up again. It came on 2 days later (less than 80 miles), went to dealer 4 days later, and they reported:

CUSTOMER STATES CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME BACK ON P0025-"B" CAMSHAFT POSITION-TIMING OVER RETARTED (B2). CUSTO MER DOES NOT HAVE TIME OT WAIT FOR THE OCV INSPECTION. I CLEARED THE CODE AND RELEASED IT TO THE CUSTOMER.

Each time they kept referring to the possibility of the "sensor screens possibly being clogged/blocked."

And they started asking about my oil change history as they did not have records of my having it done with them - and once I told them I did it, they slammed me for not using a Hyundai oil filter. ("Oh, boy - here comes trouble" I was thinking). Now, I did use 5w-30w Mobil 1 both times and they started in on "you're supposed to use 5w-20w - that may be the problem!" Yes - it is stamped on the oil filler cap "5w-20w" - I missed that (but the manual discusses use of 30w!)

So I set an appointment to bring it back in a week for them to "check the sensor screens". I was told it was about a 2 hour procedure. When I got there, the service manager got involved and said it was not a 2 hour procedure, that they had to take the top half of engine off, they needed to order all the parts to do the repair, and it would take all day. You need to reschedule when we have time.

So I told them that before that major of a procedure was done, I was willing to change my oil to 5w-20w Mobil 1 - just in case. The service manager gave me (nice) a can of MOA to add. Both of us were hoping either the oil weight or the MOA would fix the problem. I had them reset the CEL - in hope it would not come on again!

That was 4 days ago. Now - about 90 miles later - the CEL is back on again.

That's my story - thanks for listening.:(

I like the loose connector theory . . .

I had a similar code come up with my BMW and replaced the sensor right away and the code problem went away. Your dealer should replace the cam pos. sensor. Your oil has nothing to do with the code produced. I live in the south and use 5w30 synthetic in 4 of my cars including the Genny. and have for about 15 years.
