  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Anyone hearing a loud clang from the exhaust as it warms up?

Intermittently I hear a loud "clang" sound from the exhaust as the car is warming up, sitting idle in my driveway. It sounds like it's coming from under the back seat. And it's loud enough to startle me every time. It doesn't do it all the time so that's why I haven't taken it into the dealer. I don't want them to keep it for a few days to give it back with a big NTF.

It's not a backfire because the idle is perfect. A backfire will show on the tachometer. This is just a loud, metallic, clang sound. And it will only do it on the first cold start of the morning. Once warmed up it's good for the entire day, even if it sits for 9 hours while I'm at work.

So I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this noise?

Sounds like it may be the metal expanding when it warms up. Maybe there's a loose join in the system that's causing it. I'd get it looked at, just to be safe.

I have noticed the same thing with my 3.8 GT...it's occasional, but it has been concerning me that it's still happening. Have you had any resolution with this issue?

I have not had time to take it in unfortunately. I really wish they would stay open until 7pm instead of 5pm. By the time I get off work they are already close. And at an hour away they are the closest.

I have the SAME exact problem.

However, it's not the exhaust. I changed mine out for the magnaflow and the sound is still present. I beleive the sound is coming from the gas tank, or maybe a heatshield attached the gas tank. As the sound appears only when I first start up the car from a cold start, and sometimes does it when i'm filling up the gas as well.
