In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Did a search but couldn't find any info . I run synthetic in my Cummins diesel truck and would like to run in the Genny. Surprised reading through the manual no mention is made of synthetic oils. Quite surprised . Would like some input. C Also aftermarket oil filters or stay with the dealer OEM? Thanks

AMSOIL every 7,500 and dealer does oil/filter change.

Many of us use synthetic. Not sure why you would be surprised of no specific mention of synthetic in the owners manual if they don't require it. If there was a problem with using synthetic, they would have mentioned that in the owners manual. I use Mobil 1 0W-30 AFE (not to be confused with a European Formula oil like Castrol Syntec 0W-30).

There is some debate as to whether the after-market oil filters are really the same as the OEM ones, just with different badging. AFAIK, the filter only fits some Hyundai/Kia V6 and all Hyundai/Kia V8 engines, so there may not be a large enough market to justify a lot of different manufacturer's making them. If it is made in Korea, it is probably the same as OEM.

Mobil 1. Dealer also uses Mobil 1 on request and charges additional $$.

Mobil 1 in Canada, Hyundai filter , changed at dealer. Ran it flawlessly in my 2009 Genny for 75 K, now in my 2012 !

Valvoline SynPower Synthetic 5w30 in all my vehicles for the last 15 years. Never an engine problem, engines never used oil and I run my cars to over 200,000 miles before selling them. Just under 60,000 on my 2011 Genesis 4.6.

Mobil One. 10w40 I think (I have several cases of several different weights and use it in my truck, the wife's jeep and fusion and the S10 Blazers.)

I used the Hyundai filter when I changed it at 6800 miles. I bought some other brand filters and to be honest, they appear to be more robust than the Hyundai filters. I'm not sure what the endcaps are on the Hyundai filter but they look more fragile than the metal endcaps on the aftermarket filters.

I use Valvoline SynPower Synthetic 5-20 and change it every 6,500 miles. Valvoline will guarantee against engine failure due to oil breakdown for 300,000 miles.

10W-40 may be higher viscosity than recommended for the Genesis (and for new car engines except for those made in Germany). Probably fine for diesels.

The hard plastic end-caps on the OEM cartridge filter are not going to fail (for all intents indestructible in this application). A metal end-cap filter might not fit snuggly IMO, and maybe you are thinking of a different vehicle/filter?

Only applies if oil is changed every 3000 miles and you have all records of all scheduled maintenance completed on time.

I am surprised you are asking if anyone is running synthetic oil. Most of us are.
People have rather strong opinions on motor oil and change intervals.
My opinion is that any of the major brands of synthetic oil will serve you well.
As for change intervals, again my opinion is that typical in-town driving of trips less than 10 miles constitute "severe use". With such usage (my wife's BMW) I change 2x/yr irrespective of mileage.
We frequently do long road trips (last trip was 8K miles), and I do not change oil enroute, but start these trips with a fresh oil change, and then change again once I am home.

What is the oil change interval and recommended oil weight in the Genesis owners manual???

On 2009-2011 they recommend 0W-20 but say 5W-30 or 10W-30 is OK if ambient temps are high enough according to a chart they provide. Not sure if 2012 is the same.

Some non-luxury manufacturers are now recommending synthetic, such as Toyota in most of their new engines. In the past, non-luxury automakers have been reluctant to recommend synthetic because it can be a marketing problem relative to increased maintenance costs perceived by a potential buyer.

Thanks for the replies . I know diesel pickups well and run synthetic with bypass filter and extended oil changes to 20k/ new filter and quart oil every 5k. Mobil 1 and factory filter seems to be the way and thinner oil to keep the MPG up . Found the thread with pics on the oil changing procedure will be installing the trap door.
