If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello Everyone,

Has anyone switched from Lexus (any model) to the Hyundai Genesis? I'm currently in the market for a Hyundai Genesis 16' (the needed legroom and headroom best my current car, 13' GS 350 F sport - I'm very tall). I've visited my local dealership twice, the 2nd time almost purchased. Pulled out at the last minute due to fear of Hyundai's overall quality compared to Toyota. Feedback from anyone that's made the switch (form Lexus/Toyota to Hyundai) would be greatly appreciated!

Was it the J.D. Power survey that turned you off, or the fact that your new Genesis would have a better warranty than a Lexus?

Before my '12 Genesis won my heart, I tested the '12 Lexus ES 350. The Lexus, frankly, rode like an old Chevy. It did have a beautiful interior, though. I chose the Genesis and saved a lot of money too as a bonus.

Have owned most models of Lexus. The LS 460 cannot be beat by anyone. The GS is not as good as the G80 in quality or price, comparably equipped. The top of the line LS 460 is now around $90,000 MSRP. Have owned their large sport utility and their F Sport RX. The G80 is a great car. Just returned from a very long trip and most of the travel was interstate with cruise control. My overall average was slightly over 30 mph driving at 80 mph.

Just my opinion here. Despite the recent higher rating by JD Power, I believe the Lexus quality is better overall. Genesis offers better value even after you factor in Genesis' poor resale value. My biggest complaint is the Genesis radio sound is mediocre and the voice directions for the NAV only work 5% of the time. Voice radio commands work 90% of the time. Has Genesis finally got rid of that god awful Harman Kardon system yet?

If you buy and keep your cars for a while I would still get the Genesis due to a lower price and better warranty. Radio aside it is an excellent car. If you lease I would get the Lexus. I am guessing Lexus, with its higher resale value can be leased at a better price.

Lexus quality is hard to beat and the GS is a nice car - but it's not worth the money over the Genesis Sedan. Only the most discerning customers will notice the difference in quality between the two.

If you have not owned a few Lexus vehicles, then you do not get the point I stated in my previous reply. Also, service at Lexus is very expensive. SHEEHY Lexus of Annapolis, MD is on average $156 for an oil and filter change. As to G80 sound and nav. The ultimate package gives as good a sound quality (Lexicon) as the Mark Levinson. In the Lexus the Mark Levinson sound system differs from model to model as to power output and number of speakers. We have owned 5 Lexus vehicles from 1996 to 2016. They are a good vehicle, but when you factor initial cost, plus cost of maintenance, and shorter warranty the G80 comes out on top. Do not pay attention to what the NADA, kbb and other price lists state. Lexus hits you hard on trade in value. On a recent trip of 2600 plus miles the nav worked flawlessly. Used the sound system through sirius/xm, and usb. Sound was very good. Never listen to am/fm. Can't deal with the commercials and chit chat. I also own Toyota trucks. All toyota/lexus products are good quality, but you do pay more, and their warranty is for a shorter time period.

I strongly agree that the cost of maintenance for my Genesis is very low. Dealerships don't gouge their customers for service such as an oil change. The most I have ever been charged for an oil change in Los Angeles was $44. I always check dealers web sites when I'm due for a change and usually pay $25. I still think the radio sucks. In my 2012 I replaced the head unit 3-4 times. My 2015 G radio is more reliable but the sound quality is poor. And the Ultimate doesn't support Android auto!

I can't figure out how people here get 30mpg going 80 miles per hour. I usually get 14-16 mpg city and usually about 26 highway at 70 miles per hour. Guess I have a lead foot. I would still recommend the G over a Lexus all things considered.

I've had many Lexus models in my past including the same car as you, a '13 GS 350 F-sport. Here is a quick rundown of how I see them:

GS benefits:
-slightly better interior materials than g80
-slightly better MPG (but supposed to use premium, so actual gas costs are a wash)
-better handling especially with F-sport

g80 benefits:
-way more content for price (for example laser cruise is very hard to find a Gs so equipped but many G80 are)
-features like panoramic roof you can't get at all on GS
-better ride and significantly quieter while driving
-more interior room, more legroom (I'm 6'3" and love the legroom)
-transmission seems "smarter" and actually shifts better than the GS in many driving situations.
-electronics and interior controls are easier to use (both touch and remote nav screen for example, control knob only in GS)
-looks better than GS especially the '16+ odd front end Lexus did.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, decided to go with the 16 genesis 3.8 base model. The cash price is really good, I also get most of the amenities from the gs with much more headroom and legroom+Softer ride. (FYI I'm 6'10 lol) the Lexus will be missed for sure, but the rough ride and relatively cramped interior will not be missed. Hopefully hyndai ownership will be solid. The feedback is greatly appreciated!!!!

I bought a new genesis 3.8 AWD ultimate and traded a Lexus LS460 AWD with all options. Like both. I preferred the LS 460 ride slightly [had adjustable suspension]. Actually not a lot of difference in engine and transmission performance even though the lexus had a v8, almost exact same mileage. Quietness similar...slightly more wind noise in the Lexus. Preferred the Mark Levinson sound in the Lexus. The Genesis electronics generally better with more capability and love the HUD. Genesis nav voice recognition is just terrible....really awful to the point of being useless [worked fine with the Blue link Destinations and Directions option but cannot buy that stand alone]. Genesis service more reasonable and warranty obviously better, ...and the value proposition better on the Genesis. Both cars are great and would own either again based on a good purchase opportunity.

Hi - I have a 2015 Tech package and I find the sound to be outstanding. I didn't have to do too much to get something that's really good for a car. Admittedly it's not something that would leave the editors of The Absolute Sound crying for joy, but it's not crap. IMHO it beats the sound in my former Lexus GS.

Thanks
John.

That JD Power survey is based on "initial" quality, which is a count of number of problems soon after purchase. It has nothing to do with long term reliability.

Also, the JD Power Initial Quality Survey does not adequately distinguish with the importance of a particular reported problem, they just count the number of problems.

I bought a 2013 es 300h (highest trim line) brand new. It was my first entry level luxury car. It has been defect free for 4 years. The hybrid mileage is outstanding. I still own it. So why did I buy a 2017 G80 Ultimate?

When I first sat in the G80 I noticed that it was more luxurious and refined than the 300h in almost every respect. It has a more sumptuous interior (the lexus looks plastic-y). The premium lexicon sound system is far better than the premium mark levinson. The seat ventilators are poor in the lexus; it works well in the G80. The extendible thigh support in the lexus racks out 3 or 4 centimeters while the G80 extends 3 or 4 inches. The seats (especially the driver's) are more comfortable in the G80.

Most importantly for me, the G80 rides smoother than the Lexus, and it is far quieter.

So I am happy with both cars, but I prefer the Genesis. Luckily my wife prefers the Lexus. My G80 has been defect free for 10 months.

I will never knock Lexus, but the G80 just feels more like luxury to me.

Thanks again for the feedback everyone, i finally found a 16' 3.8 base model Genesis and purchased today (Blue exterior with grey/brown accented interior). The 1st few hrs of ownership have been splendid. The Suv like interior room, and ride smoothness is amazing. In sport mode this thing hauls a**.

Congrats on your purchase.. Its a great car with plenty of room. I myself like the larger sedan type vehicles.. I do currently still have my GS4.
