ATF fluid temperature?

Hi everyone,

What is a normal temperature range for the ATF say after 15 minutes or 1 hour of normal driving in a normal climate?

My 3.8L 2015 ultimate shows about 70F or upto 90F after 1 hour of driving! That is about 26 to 31 degrees Celsius although I live in Dubai hot summer climate. The temp sensor is absolutely fine. I recently added a fluid additve such as BG ATC Plus that cools or as a conditioner for the ATF and added a couple of ounces of coolant booster to the radiator coolant but I don't really feel this is the root cause. A friend once said that the Genesis tranny acts up stupidly of the ATF is below 130 fehrenheit. And truly I feel a rough shift from 4th to 5th until the ATF is hot then it gets better.

Your thoughts, please!

My 5.0 transmission temps hover around 190F(Torque Pro meter) after about an hour of driving; which is ideal to burn away moisture in the oil.

I am not sure why your transmission fluid runs that cool, but you may want to drain the fluid if the additives are keeping the fluid too cool as to not evaporate the water that may be inside the transmission fluid as transmission fluid is hydroscopic(attracts water from air).

Just my opinion based off of information I read online over the years about transmission fluid.

Here is an old reading on my 5.0 including the transmission fluid temp.

How are you reading transmission temperature? The Hyundai 8 speed transmission requires a special formula to convert sensor value into actual temperatures. If you are reading it with something like Torque, make sure you downloaded the corrected extended PID kit for your car (I think it's a plugin called Advanced EX or Advanced LT for Hyundai). Usually Torque will make the correct adjustments but it's kind of picky. Any other tool besides Hyundai GDS may or may not make the correct calculations.

Your transmission cooler is routed through the cold side tank of the radiator. You won't be seeing such low temperatures unless your engine is running very cold or your sensor is not being read correctly. It's fairly normal to see transmission temperatures about 10*F less than the engine temperature, because it's not only being cooled by the radiator fluid- it's being heated up too. Even if your cooler lines weren't flowing and you somehow hadn't shredded the rear bearings in the transmission, the internal heat generated by the torque converter would have you running nice and toasty alone.

Thanks for the hint -- I use a Launch scanner that reads ATF temp; and then I used a Special Function to perform AT adaptation / relearn function which reads the throttle %, ATF temp, and gear.

I ran a test yesterday and drove for about 2 hours:
- Location: Dubai, outside temp was 33 degrees Celsius = 91 F.
- At cold start, ATF temp was 10 c = 50 F.
- After two hours of driving, ATF temp reached 35 c = 95 F.

I am confused with these readings as ATF must have been hotter than those readings for sure!

Sorry to revive an old thread. How did you get the ATF temperature on torque pro? I got both the hyundai plugins for the app and I still cant see ATF temp.

It has been a while since I used the Torque Pro app, but to my knowledge the data was always present under the option that has all the engine parameters. However, I did purchase the full version of the app for about $6 I think. It was years ago.

Support for Hyundai ATF temp on the A8TR1 was removed as an official feature, but you can code it back in with custom PIDs. The issue (and reason for removal) is that the "temperature" is a derived number and not an actual number. I forgot the math, but they were sampling the lower radiator hose temperature and the transmission valve body sensor and then kludging them into a single number. It was basically identical to your coolant temperature unless the slip value had an extended duration.

Hyundai GDS doesn't even report trans temp.
