If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have finally achieved audio streaming awesomeness in my 2012 Technology Package Genesis. In fact, the results were far better than I expected.

I had been experimenting with a couple different Bluetooth aux streaming devices. They would connect, but I kept battling intermittent audio dropouts. Eventually, I figured out that I could eliminate the audio dropouts if I disconnected the phone to car Bluetooth link. That was not an acceptable work-around. Reading other threads, it looks like the Bluteooth dropout problem affects both iOS and Andriod phones. An Andriod owner figured out that he could eliminate the dropouts by forcing the phone to use a different BT profile. But, iOS won't let you change the BT profile.

Then I got the idea to try AirPlay. As I noted in another thread, I ordered a generic AirPlay receiver. [ame="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00M1CAEJC/"]Ansmart WiFi Music Receiver[/ame]

Here are the up sides...
  • Sound quality is substantially better than Bluetooth.
  • The connection is easy to selectively choose.
  • I don't lose email, text, and other sounds while not listening to phone music.
Setup was a snap. I changed the SSID and AirPlay service to "Genesis," so it looks official and not a generic streaming device.

The only quirk was that the iPhone would not connect to the Internet while connected to the AirPlay WiFi. However, I just had to tweak the connection settings on the iPhone, and I am totally in business-- the phone will connect and AirPlay over WiFi while using its LTE for Internet.

Totally Awesome!

What did you tweak. Mine is supposed to be here next week

Would hate to lose Internet (pandora, etc) and only have songs on phone.

Please list specific steps!
I believe I ordered the same one.

steering wheel control??

I wonder if this will work on the 2011. I really would like to get away from the cord in the center consol. It's a PITA with my iPhone 5.

I should have put the network setup changes in my original post... It is very easy, but most responses on Apple forums are "you can't do that."

The IP address of the device is 192.168.222.224, and it starts up with a DHCP service just like any other home router. It is designed to connect to your home's WiFi for Internet access, assuming you have home WiFi. So, on the phone, you will initially see the usual DHCP stuff automatically populated.

Follow these steps below customize the configuration as a static IP.
  1. Connect to the WiFi network using the normal Apple process.
  2. Follow optional steps below if you want to change the SSID or AirPlay service name.
  3. Click the enclosed "i" ⓘ to open the WiFi network settings.
  4. Note the IP address assigned to the phone (first line) and Router IP address (third line). The Router IP address is the address of the WiFi device, mine is 192.168.222.254.
  5. Second, note the subnet mask, typically 255.255.255.0.
  6. Select the "Static" button above the IP information.
  7. Type in an IP address in the first line. I chose a high number, 192.168.222.225 to try to avoid some risk of conflict if there is another device connected in my car.
  8. Type in the subnet mask from above.
  9. Blank out the values in the Router, DNS, and Search Domains fields. THis is the important step, because blanks here are what signal the iPhone to use its own Internet connection rather than the WiFi connection.
  10. Back out, and you are done. You are connected to the AirPlay WiFi, but you will not see the WiFi symbol on the top left of your screen, because the phone is not connecting to the Internet through the device. But it works.
  11. Sweep up from the bottom edge of the phone to get the AirPlay selection option.
  12. See my screen shots below.
Optional instructions to change the SSID and AirPlay Service
  1. Follow these steps before changing the IP settings, but after you have connected to the SoundMate.
  2. Open Safari on the iPhone and go to IP address 192.168.222.254.
  3. Click the Music Service button to change the name of the AirPlay service. I made mine "Genesis."
  4. Click the Basic Settings button to change the SSID. I made my SSID "Genesis" also.
  5. If you change the SSID, you will need to re-connect to the WiFi network again, using the new SSID.
  6. Now you can resume the steps above to setup the WiFi network settings to allow Internet access.

Unfortunately, this is just a streaming device. So, it will not give steering wheel track control.

Yes, it should work perfectly on any car with a standard aux audio input. So, it would work on all of the prior Tech package cars. Plus, it would also work on any of the other option levels if you wanted to improve audio streaming quality with the AirPlay device.

Great that this fix works for you! But do you still connect your phone via BT with this set-up?

My primary home audio/video receiver (Sony) is AirPlay and Bluetooth capable. I agree that the AirPlay audio is much superior to Bluetooth. I also stream YouTube video wirelessly to my LG TV via AirPlay. Great tech! I love to watch Britcoms like One Foot in the Grave this way. Give this episode 30 minutes viewing and you won't regret it. The show will send car lovers into hilarious agony. This may be the funniest 30 minutes ever made for TV. The biggest laughs begin at the 10 minute mark, so be patient.

No, I removed my BT receiver, so I only connect via WiFi and stream via AirPlay.

If I could figure out the video input via the aux, I would give that a try too via AirPlay. But, I do not know what the car supports, and video streaming is really not that useful to me; though it is very cool.

Thanks for the video link. I will definitely watch it when I can steal the 30 minutes. :)

You should be ble to connect to te Car BT for the calls.

I certainly hope so!

I think I totally misunderstood PMCErnie's question. Thanks for the follow-up, marinakorp.

Yes, I still have the phone connected to the car's Bluetooth for making and receiving phone calls. That works 100% normally. So, when I am listening to music via WiFi-AirPlay and a call comes in, the car picks it up and switches audio to the phone call over BT. At the same time, the phone pauses the music. When the call is over, audio switches back to Aux-AirPlay, and the phone resumes play of the song.

Great instructions!

I was able to connect to the device, and still have my phone connect to the internet for Pandora and play via this device.

I have to wait for the snows to blow over before installing in my car.. .but working from a USB connection and headphones - works great.

THANKS!

Been driving with this for a week or so - sounds great.

I can live without the onscreen stuff - my mount is in the CD/DVD holder anyway, so the Phone sits right below the nav screen anyway... in perfect reach for a Fast forward...or pause.. watever.

No sound "skipping" like with a bluetooth USB in the armrest... just great sound.

Phone switches over to car for BT calls, and then back to the WIFI for the music.

Great, inexpensive workaround for the older Tech cars.

Okay, I've never used Airplay, so I could be missing something really simple here. And I'm honestly not trying to be a douchebag, but wouldn't it be easier to just connect the headphone out on your phone to the Aux input of the Genesis sound system? I mean, why insert a wireless link when it's so easy to get source-quality analog?

Is the Airplay link serving some other function? What am I missing?

It's the ability to get untethered streaming. Wired headphone totally works and sound very good. But I do not like the extra wires hanging around if I can avoid them.

On a somewhat related topic, has anyone effectively been able to mirror their phone to the nav screen, for emails and the like? I know i spoke with someone a while ago regarding this, but the process did not work for the 2011.

I am certainly interested in this streaming mod though. I tried a regular wireless BT receiver and it did not work.

I purchased the Ansmart WiFi unit, and while searching for an answer to my own question, i came across this:

I am thinking of purchasing this at some point, just for giggles i guess. Not a necessary piece of equipment, but fun. Before i bought the Genny, i was in the market for a LS460, which had touch screen capability. VaisTech makes an iPhone mirror that includes touch screen capability, so you could fully use the Nav screen as the 'surface' of the phone. The control is much more desirable to me than just the mirror. While i like the wheel, the integration of the VaisTech unit is pretty awesome.
