If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Has anyone seen their side mirrors auto dim? Ive been blinded a couple times now with no noticeable dimming so Im wondering if its just not senstive enough or maybe mines not functioning correctly. I checked the manual and theres only info on the main rearview (which I havent seen dim either)

I think it depends on the model. Some of the lower models (maybe just the base model?) don't have this feature... at least in Canada.
My 2.0T Prestige definitely dims all three mirrors.

i definitely have them, auto dim is written on the mirrors and I can see the outline where the auto dimming should occur

All 3 of mine dim with no issue.
does it happen pretty regularly? like do you feel it needs to be someone really blinding you for a while for it to dim or does it dim when someone is driving past your mirrors with some bright headlights?

the side mirror dimming relies on the interior mirror dimming, it uses the sensor from the inside mirror. if that mirror isn't dimming, the sides will not.

if your rear window is tinted you will have issues. I have 5% on my rear window in my G80 and the mirrors will not tint, I had to invent an over ride to get the side mirrors to tint, the interior mirror isn't an issue for me as the rear tint blocks the blinding light, but the side mirrors/windows don't.

I purchased a laptop camera shield from amazon and stuck it over the sensor at the rear of the inside mirror (the white sensor that faces the windshield) when I want the mirrors to tint I reach up and close the shield. Works like a charm.

My mirror tint worked fine before I tinted the rear window and having experienced the same issue on my last dozen cars, I know it is the tint in my case.

I've found that when the environment is dark, they go into 'dimming mode' automatically.
Example: When pulling out of my pitch black garage, the mirrors are in 'dimming' mode. Once in daylight, they go back to 'normal' pretty quickly.

damn I have 15%, and I didnt even think about this being the issue. Thanks for the heads up, Ill have to test this out

just an FYI, if you leave the shield closed the mirrors will stay tinted all the time, even in daylight. I found a happy medium after trial and error where the shield part way closed so it covers the sensor just enough to work in properly in daytime and night time.. As a result I haven't had to touch it in a few months. Works IMO, as it would if the rear window was not tinted.

Thanks for the explanation and hack!

If you don’t want to deal with a slider over the sensor you can also just stop by your tint shop and ask for the same scrap of film. I put that over my sensor to balance it out.

Autodim works by comparing brightness from that front facing sensor and another one behind your rear view mirror.

That's a really good idea.

If you're too lazy to go to the tint shop again. There's a ghetto version of this hack. Packing tape with black sharpie coloring on it, and a 2nd layer of tape so the sharpie doesn't smear 👌

I had my mirrors dim for the first time today!

Lifehack guys: just get a jackass in a lifted truck to tailgate you for several minutes and his headlights that are perfectly eye level will eventually activate the sensor even with a ton of tint

Thanks overcompensating truck dude, for showing me that my mirrors do indeed work when I really, really need them to! I kind of like that they arent that sensitive, because that auto dimming is dark as hell and seemed to take a while to 'undim' (for the lack of a better word)

Got plenty of those shit huge ass lifted trucks around here. I see a lot of them trying to race around like they have a fast car or something. Hah.
