  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I've seen 20 different discussions and 20 different suggestions on the proper procedure to change the transmission fluid. I have a 2010 4.6, and just want to do a drop and fill. Unfortunately, the service manual is pretty vague on the proper drain/fill procedure and how many quarts I will need. Anyone have a good suggestion or reference they can point me to? Ive changed a many vehicle's transmission fluid, but apparently, this one is a different animal. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

From what I've learned, it depends on your transmission. Do you have the six speed Aisin transmission?

You know, I honestly don’t know for sure. Is there a quick/easy way to tell?

I don't know about a quick easy way to tell. I believe the early BH sedans had the 6 speed auto and the 2013-2014 Genesis sedans have the 8 speed?

I definitely know it’s not an 8 speed for sure…so probably the 6 speed.

Numerous videos on YouTube about this.

2010 4.6 SHOULD have the ZF 6-speed (not the same 6-speed that the 3.8 used), but you could probably enter your car’s VIN somewhere online and find out for sure.

Thank you.

How many quarts are most of you seeing on a typical drop and fill?

I looked back at my drain/fill service record and the dealership charged me for 6 quarts of fluid. The videos I have seen show about 4 quarts typically.

I just called my dealership. For the 2013 5.0, the dealer told me 6-6.5 for a drain and fill. A dry system would need 11 quarts.

I bought 2 gallons of the Valvoline Maxlife ATF synthetic so I should have plenty. Thanks guys!

Here is some good info. They specifically mention Maxlife be usable but maybe not optimal. You can see in the pictures in the flush instructions posted that the person is using Motorcraft Mercon SP.

Interesting. I never flush a trans, just drop and fill. I saw a lot of the guys speaking positively about the maxlife on here, so I figured Id give it a shot.

2012 Genesis 3.8 owner and very infrequent poster here. I understand the 8 speed transmission was designed and built by Hyundai first appeared in 2012.

I had to replace two transmissions, thankfully both under an extended warranty (Zurich America).

Bought the car in January, 2017 with 36,000 miles from a suburban Philly Volvo dealer. It was a trade and I figured no one is buying a Korean rear wheel drive car in the winter, so I got a good deal. I read on this forum that the early 2012 models came with a guarantee: that the transmission would fail. I went to a local Hyundai dealer and bought an aftermarket warranty.
