  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I just now drove home in a real frog-strangler of a rainstorm. It was raining so hard that the wipers could barely keep up.

A big gust of flying water hit the car and I felt the brakes grab for just an instant. Then, a red triangle lit up on the panel and a box appeared on the LCD announcing "Check AEB System." The box went away, but the triangle stayed on for maybe a half mile and then went off. The same thing happened twice more with big gusts of rain. When driving more slowly in the subdivision, there were no more such alarms.

Apparently, the radar thinks a car is close in front briefly when the rain gusts hit. This is the first really big rain I have driven in since I bought the car in July

AEB activation does not trigger the warnings that you describe (at least on Ultimate models) - you get a rapid chime alarm and a large flashing red car icon/warning message in the HUD. There is no "check AEB system" message - that appears to be a fault/error message - maybe water induced?

That's what is does with a car stopping or pulling out ahead, but, sorry to say, that the "Check AEB" signal is precisely what I got today in the rainstorm. I have seen a number of red cars over the last 4 months.

I think the flying water produced a flickering signal that something was in front of the car and the software for the AEB became confused by the rapidly fluctuating signal, resulting in the check AEB indication. The braking I felt was just a flicker of the brakes, not a steady application.

What i mean is that what you describe doesn't appear to normal AEB logic - I'd still expect you to hear the rapid chime and see the flashing red car if the system got confused - even if just confused for a second and I don't see the AEB activating at all (car applying brakes) without those preceding warnings? Seems more like a fault of some type. I've driven my 3.8 AWD Ultimate in heavy rain and taken walls of water from approaching cars and have never seen behaviour like what you described. I'd suggest a visit to the dealer to run diagnostics.

My wife had the same AEB message the other day during an ice/snowstorm when the sensors became covered with slush.

I don't believe anything is wrong with it. After writing code for IBM for electro-mechanical devices for 35 years, I will bet on the code. My last work for IBM was testing electro-mechanical code by throwing curves at it. There are situations where the coder simply has to punt because the effort and the amount of code to handle every possible situation is simply too much and the result is not critical.

Yes, it is possible that the red car appeared. But if it did, it was too brief to register and I was quite aware after the first instance. There was no more than a instant tap on the brakes.

Here is the info from the manual.

Thanks - that explains why the "check AEB system" warning might have come on - good to know. I don't see any indication that the brakes would activate in this condition, but I suppose anything is possible?

I also saw the same thing, but it was snowing and and when the message showed up I knew what was happening.

Here are a few pictures
