If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello current and future Genesis owners,

I am writing to share a significant safety issue.

I have a 2023 Genesis GV60EV. In January 2025, while I was driving about 40 MPH on a paved road, my rear axle shattered. When this happens there is a lot of angry noise, smoke pours out of the rear of the car, and you lose all power. When this happened to me, I had not been driving in any remarkable circumstances (paved road, normal speeds). It was a huge pain and pretty scary because it was winter in Vermont, it was at night, and I was out of cell phone range. Do not recommend!

The car was towed to the nearest dealer. The service manager was beside himself. Said there was no sign of any impact which would indicate why the axle just up and snapped. He replaced the axle and the car was returned to me after a huge amount of hassle. I started driving it again.

In March 2025, less than two months later, it happened AGAIN. Again, totally unremarkable driving conditions - 35 MPH on a paved road. Again loud angry noises, smoke pouring out, no power as I was pulling across traffic from a stop sign. Scary.

I posted this all in my report to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration. You can see it here: https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls?siType=C&nhtsaId=11655939

So as you might imagine, I'm done driving this vehicle. This is a major safety issue and Genesis's fix doesn't work. Suggests some serious engineering issue with the car.

To top it all off, Genesis is refusing to buy the car back. I'm at a loss. The resale on these cars is horrible so I'm going to get something like $30k if I trade it in. Genesis has destroyed about $45k of value and put my life and the life of others at risk and they are refusing to take any responsibility and make me whole in any way. I'm hugely disappointed.

Letting all you current and future Genesis drivers know. Apparently this known issue also affects IONIQ 5 and IONIQ6.

Stay safe out there!

Did Genesis fix it again and do you have it back allegedly drivable? Unless they are claiming that you somehow caused it, it should be covered by the extensive Genesis drivetrain warranty. I have not heard of anyone else having this and having it happen twice is truly weird if no one else is reporting it. You want it repaired under warranty whether or not that you ever drive it again.

If Genesis believes they fixed it, they won't agree to buy it back. I don't know of any auto company that would on a two year old model that failed after a first part replacement. I know it is scary but feces does happen. If they repair with new new OEM parts and turn it back over to you, I would keep driving it. But this time make sure they use new parts, not reconditioned parts. If it happened a third time, that is different.

Your hit is from depreciation. Does your dealership have any used 2023 models for sale? Would they give you a trade-in for another 2023 model? That way your hit should be minimized to the difference between wholesale and retail which should be relatively small.

If no one else has experienced this (I haven't seen any reports in this forum) you may have just been the victim of a scary coincidence. I used to listen to a car blog and the blogger used to say that "new" was an acronym for "Never Ever Worked".

I perused the Vermont lemon law from the Dept. of motor vehicles web site and it appears that the Vermont law is more expansive than most. You might qualify for the lemon law. Check it out and see:

But we are all different on our risk tolerance. If your decision is that you don't trust Genesis cars at all now, and if you don't qualify for the lemon law, you are going to have to take the hit and move on.

Thanks for this!

Genesis replaced the rear axle before they even sold it to me. It fractured. They replaced it again. It fractured again.

Seems crazy that I would have to drive this car again. If the next time, an accident is fatal, certainly the Monday morning quarterbacking would be, “Why the hell would anyone get back in that car when the “fix” is clearly not working.”

I’m in MA and working through the Lemon Law process.

Thank you again for your thoughts!

Very sorry to hear about your experience. Do you know when your vehicle was built? The factory date is usually on the sticker in the driver door frame near the bottom right.

Early versions of the 2023 model years (Genesis introduced the 2023 model year in 2021) had issues with the axels and there was a recall. It looks like they performed the recall on your vehicle before you bought it. That isn't the scary part of about this - but rather that two successive repairs have failed suggesting whatever they are doing to remedy isn't working.

Hopefully the lemon law process will force their hand. This isn't something anyone should have to deal with.

I sure hope so, too! In the meantime, I’m back to driving my kid’s car: A 2017 Chevy Bolt with over a 100k miles and still chugging.

I did not read the NHTSA link until now. I have to modify my answer to you. It appears that this has happened three times. Now it goes from the unlikely to the unreasonable category and I don't blame you for not wanting to drive it ever again.

Good luck with the lemon law claim. It is a shame that Genesis, at least until now, has not stepped up to the plate and offered to swap you out.
