  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hey all. My 2012 back up camera is not working as it should. The image is grainy, and twitchy at times. Colour fades in and out. The writing on the screen is clear and not twitchy, and all other functions of the head unit work as they should, including DVD movies. It is only the image from the camera that is poor. I've had it to the dealer, they replaced the camera with no improvement. Then they called me in to see the regional service rep. He agrees there is a problem, but admitted that the next step is either a $7k item or a $10k item. So he's not sure what they will do, under warranty of course. I assume the two high dollar items are the head unit and the display unit.

I'm so nervous about this as the car is flawless, and I'm afraid that replacing one of these items will introduce other issues.

My gut is telling me that there is an issue somewhere between the camera and the display, a loose connector or something, that is feeding a poor image to the display.

What do you all think???

Naturally, you should get it fixed. It's broken.

A lot of other people have reported the same problem on this forum. You can use Google search, or the forum search above to find the threads.

Dealer solutions seem to include the following:
  • Replace camera
  • Reinstall same camera
  • Repair wire that was kinked/bent/damaged

Seems to intermittent for some owners. Some people experienced this more often after raining. Might be corrosion of the connectors. I would ask the dealer if they have any electrical contact cleaner they can spray on the wire end, and camera end, of where the connection is made near the camera (or possibly at the head unit).

When this issue stared? It could be some component on the unit is bad I had seen problem like that and most of the time is one IC or other components. Where do you live?

The idea that it is a bent or kinked cable, or poor connection seems much more likely (to me) than a bad component. The regional service rep did suggest the contact spray as well. He mentioned there were 3 or 4 connectors between the camera and display.

I'm in Ontario Canada, and the problem existed when I bought the car used about 6 weeks ago. Somehow I neglected to check the back up camera during test drives. I know what the camera should look like from my previous car, the sonata hybrid, which had a brilliant, bright, clear and colourful image. By the way my car is a premium, not Tech.

Agreed. Even in the cases where they replaced the camera to fix the problem, it could have just been a poor electrical connection.

I just read through many of the posts from others with camera problems. Mine is not intermittent. It is constant, no black lines, just low resolution, twitchy, like the Blair Witch project. Rain or washing doesn't change it. Tapping on the trunk doesn't change it.

I just spoke with my dealer for an update, and they decided to order me a new head unit. I mentioned again the wire harness, and they said that's the last step if the head unit doesn't solve it. I guess the Labour of diagnosing the wire harness exceeds the cost of the head unit.

Is a head unit swap fairly straightforward?

Yes, that's the best option to now if is the HU or some wires. I think for me the problem is the HU.

  1. Dealer doesn't pay for warranty parts, they get reimbursed by HMA. HMA probably has a deal with supplier (such as Harman International) to replace all defective units (since HMA has no way to repair them).
  2. When dealer performs warranty labor, they get paid a hourly rate by HMA which is less than what they charge the public for non-warranty work, so dealers like to keep warranty labor to a minimum.

Update: Head unit was replaced and problem solved. back-up camera is now a clear and bright image, but still not as good as my Sonata Hybrid's was..

Good that unit probably is going to be repair at a company that I know.

I have a new problem now. Since getting the new head unit, I get an intermittent very high frequency buzz or hiss, like the ringing you would hear in your ears, but slightly stronger. It is random, and when it happens, lasts about 5-10 minutes then disappears for 30-60 min. When the hiss is happening, it doesn't matter what mode the radio is in, XM, FM, AUX, AM, all hiss the same. The hiss also doesn't change with volume adjustment, it is constantly same volume and intensity regardless of music volume. If I turn the music up it can drown out the hiss slighlty but it is such a high frequency that I can still hear it even with music up loud. If I turn off the radio using the power button, the hiss goes away. Turn back on and the hiss starts again. When the hiss stops, everything is normal.

Any idea what this could be? Have you seen this issue before? I have the touch screen nav in the Premium.

When I start working with this unit we got the same problem but was with the amplified if you got warranty in your vehicle I suggest you to change you amplified. What genesis you have?
