  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I've given up on the Genesis dealership closet to me. Besides not keeping up with entering data concerning when I had maintenance done, taking freakin' hours to do a fairly simple set of tasks, and finally, failing 3 or the last 4 pickups at my house. My last trip was the final free maintenance (coming up on 36,000) and instead of replacing the cabin filter, which is listed as maintenance, left a note that next time the owner should request changing the cabin filter because there is "debris" in there. Oh, you mean the cabin filter that I requested you replace 11,000 miles (2nd from most recent maintenance) ago, which wasn't, but had a note that dealership would call me when the part arrived, the filter requested when making the appointment and when my G70 was picked up? That filter?

I've heard of dealerships treating you like royalty when under warranty and a dog afterwards, never heard of one going so far out of the way to make sure they get any of my money.

The dealership? Hyundai / Genesis of Stockton

I sincerely hope they give it to Modesto

bush league.

I'll shortly stop posting here, as after doing several test drives and visiting several dealerships I've made my decision on whether to replace my 2019 Lincoln Nautilus (coming off of lease in three months) with a Genesis GV80 or Mercedes GLE 450. I was favoring the Genesis until I got to experience the Genesis dealership experience. Now, I'm sure there must be some great Hyundai dealer out there somewhere who gives their customers luxury-style treatment in sales and service (and might even put a Genesis sign somewhere on their building) but I've yet to find one, just as there are undoubtedly plenty of snooty, disreputable, overpriced Mercedes dealers out there (I experienced one in my search). I like the GV80 as much as the GLE 450, but the dealership experience tipped me toward the Mercedes.

Understand your reasoning. What is the dollar difference between the two cars?

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
Yes, you have to consider price paid for the car vs. services rendered. But if after-sales-service is a big deal to you, it can be concerning. My base G80 was $37,500 new, much less than anything else available in the same class. It has features that were upgrades on other models that were in the mid $40's and higher.

My car is 2 years old now with only 11,200 miles. Bought at Genesis of Plano, Texas (north side of Dallas).

But to your point, I had a similar experience two weeks ago. First of all, I've resigned to doing my own maintenance, even though we get the free maintenance for 3 years. But I had the G80 brake recall to deal with, so I figured I'd take it in and let them change the oil and cabin filter, and do a few things. I provided my own oil - even though the manual requires full synthetic (ACEA A5), the only put in standard oil. You have to pay $45 extra to get full synthetic. So I provided my own oil for half that price.

I called to make the appointment six days in advance. The lady who answered the phone had a bad cough and had no issue with coughing directly into the phone - several times. Okay.. whatever. Of course they had no valet cars available, it would be over a month out if I wanted to schedule that. I asked if I brought it in, can I get a loaner? Even a Hyundai will work - she said it was doubtful. With the car shortage due to covid, I get it - but that was one reason I bought the car. Okay, so the wife will have to drive me there. I listed out the things I wanted done -

Brake recall for 2019 G80
Change the oil, I'm providing the oil, they supply the filter
Tighten rear-view mirror (it wobbled)
Replace cabin filter (first time)
Check four-wheel alignment (a pay item for me, if needed)
Standard multi-point inspection

The lady was not familiar with the recall, had to look it up. Asked me if I was bringing "Mobil One" - I said no, it's another full synthetic oil. She said "not Mobil One"? I said no, but it meets the spec. Got to the cabin filter - she said we normally change those at 15K miles. I pointed out the manual says 12 month or 7,500 miles and she said "we'll see what we can do". She called me "hun" several times... friendly lady.

Same lady called me back the day before the appointment as a reminder - nice touch - but asked me what work I was having done! We had to go over it all, again. Poor system! At least her cough was better, but not gone.

So I took it in at appointment time and a guy comes out with an iPad to sign in the car. He begins typing in the VIN, messing it up and retrying several times. I asked him "why don't you jus scan it in?" - he said we don't have that capability. Once he pulls the car up, he turns to ask me "okay, what do you want to have done with the car?" Are you kidding me? He answered "well, that was probably all entered on the Hyundai side, it's not showing up in the Genesis side (of their system). So, we went over is again.. third time - and got it entered.

Went to pick the car later that afternoon. I get to the counter and the lady says "that'll be $140 (something)". I said for what, Genesis offers free maintenance for three years. I asked if the alignment needed to be done, she said no, it was for the oil change. I said that should be free, she looked at me like I was crazy, said "you need to take that up with your service advisor", and took the next person in line. So I went in search for the service manager, luckily he was still there, it was after 5PM. He said "my bad, I didn't enter it correctly" and did fix it, but still - I should not have to deal with this crap.

A few days later I logged into the Genesis Connected Services website and none of my service had been logged / registered. They have that section where you can enter your own service, and I do that religiously - oil changes, tire rotations, even radio firmware updates.

Okay - I just looked at their website and the recall warning is gone - thank you. I understand that can take a bit.

I'm used to Sewell dealerships in Dallas, Sewell Infiniti in particular. They are remarkable, and treat you like a king. Their facilities are new, clean, they offer a nice seating area with soft drinks and coffee, snacks, nice seating, TVs, good lighting, etc... and they answer with "hello Mr. Xxxxx" when I call - from the CallerID.

So you have to weigh the cost of the car with the service. If you want to save thousands (even $10's of thousands) and you're fine doing your own maintenance, and don't mind dealing with a low end service department those times you have to go in, then Genesis is a bargain.

Understand your reasoning. What is the dollar difference between the two cars?
It is theoretically a $4,000 difference (with the Mercedes being more expensive), at least in terms of MSRP. The vehicles are very close in size and configuration, with the GV80 having a few things the GLE 450 lacks like higher quality leather (with the Mercedes I would have had to go with a dark interior to get the nappa leather) and a limited slip differential (I would have had to go with the much more expensive GLE 53 to get that). The GLE 450 also has some things the GV80 lack, however, like air suspension and augmented reality -- and the ability to avoid low profile tires even going with the top trim. Mercedes is about the last luxury automaker that doesn't automatically package oversized wheels and rubber band tires with their top trims. Power was about the same -- both engines and drive trains are powerful and smooth. I do like the GLE 450's mild hybrid system, however. It provided a noticeable improvement in power and smoothness when accelerating from a standing start, for instance, but I'm not knocking the GV80 here. It was great too.

I say theoretically because I had not actually found a Hyundai (err, Genesis) dealer in my area willing to give me MSRP. I'm sure if I had really looked around like I did with the Mercedes I would have managed to find one, even if I had to go somewhat out of my area. One Mercedes dealer I went to was demanding a $10,000 surcharge -- soon to go to $12,500 so better hurry up and put down that deposit! -- and they were particularly snooty about it, with the salesman saying they draw from a wealthy clientele who have no issues with the extra cost (while looking down his nose at me like I was some plebian). The next one I went to had a remarkably different attitude and I really liked the place. They started out talking market adjustment prices, but as soon as they realized I was serious I easily got it down to MSRP.

The final thing I like about the GLE 450 is that I can do a true factory order coming out of their Alabama plant. I will be getting exactly the interior and exterior colors and option configuration that I want (and without low profile tires!). Two out of my last three vehicles have been factory orders, and I prefer that buying experience.

This will likely be my last internal combustion vehicle, so plan to buy it (no lease this time) and hold on to it for a while, waiting to see how the whole EV transition shakes out before I go for an all-electric.
