  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I'd like to buy a base 3.8 sedan. Test drove a platinum on this slightly overcast day and was overcome by the bright, distracting reflections from the cabin trim. Has anyone had a similar reaction and, more importantly, been able to come up with a solution? I'm aware that some colors come with a lighter shade of trim, but it also is mirror-like.

Well, we have a Pearl White 3.8L Sedan...cashmere interior but the dashboard is dark (almost charcoal or dark gray). I have a nearly black dashmat ordered as well. I live in SE Arizona and I cannot say that we've ever been distracted by reflections...we've had the car 5 weeks now. The only time I notice any problem is when my wife lays something white or light colored on the dash...then there's a problem. Other than that....nothing...

I have a 2010 black/black and have never experienced what you describe under any weather/lighting conditions.

Craziest thing I have ever read....might want to make a visit to your eye doctor. Light sensitivity can indicate trouble

Yes, you should go see an eye doctor and find out why you can't see the OP is talking about the base model Genesis (which has the wood-grain plastic high gloss on front [not top] of the dash, instead of leather insert). People with US Genesis with Premium and/or Tech Package need not respond because you have leather inserts on your dash (Canadians also get the high gloss dash instead of leather insert on "some" higher level trims besides base model Genesis).

Getting back to the OP, it did bother me a little in certain kinds of light, but after I while I got used to it and don't even notice it anymore.

I have a Canadian 09 premium and can understand about the reflections.
I would have to agree that it was a little odd at first, but I had no problem adjusting as well. Sunglasses can help too. :)
Lol on the eye doctor, Mark!

sorry this is kinda off topic but i felt a weird urge to point out that our usernames are pretty similar. lol. anyways, i have no clue of what you experienced.

The high gloss wood did cause reflections until I took some 300 grit sandpaper and buffed it down to a matte finish. Only problem was that wood isn't very thick so I had to cover up the places where I wore right through to the metal with some satin finish paint. No reflections now.

I guess with the Tech Package in Canada, you have the leather insert? Maybe that is why you don't have the problem.

For those who do have the high gloss dash instead of leather insert, it is plastic made to look like wood, not wood, just like the other "wood-grain" plastic trim around the shifter and door controls, etc.

The V6 Tech in 2009 had the wood not the leather. Not sure about the 2012, but I think it is the same. For the Canadian market only the V8 has the leather dash.

I have a White/Cashmere 3.8 base going on about 2.5 months now and have never experienced a problem with glare from the wood/plastic dash and trim.

It depends on where you live and to some degree what the season is. It is more prevalent in the winter when the sun is lower in the sky and also there is a clear view to the sky on the right hand side of the car (not obstructed by trees or buildings) that bounces light off the dash into the drivers eyes. It's really more of a psychological thing and one just has to learn to ignore it when it happens (which as mentioned, is only in certain lighting situations).

A few years ago there was a least one Canadian on this forum with a V8 Tech Package (Tech Package was optional in 2009) that was trying to replace his leather with the wood-grain plastic. I don't recall if he ever had it changed.
