Howdy folks,
I'm 6'4" and also have a problem with a chronically sore shoulder, so I pretty much have to sit straight up and down in my seat to be comfortable. I'm looking at the base 3.8 model because of the extra headroom (no sunroof) and am wondering if there are any other people around my height with the base model that have to sit similarly to how I do? I can lean the seat back a little but not too much.

Also another quick question that probably more people can answer. There is a 2012 3.8 base model with no options that has 10,000 miles on it and is listed at $25,000 from the dealership. Seems like a decent price to me but it doesn't come with the 10 year/100,000 warranty that made me feel better about buying a genesis in the first place. Does anyone feel the deal is good enough to not worry about the warranty? Thanks in advance to anyone who answers my questions :D

I'm on the taller & larger side of the spectrum, and I fit absolutely amazingly well in my 2012 3.0 - I have quite a bit of headroom to spare.

Thanks for answering my question, I'll have to re-sit in a genesis when my pregnant wife isn't staring laser beams through my forehead thinking I'm going to buy a car when we can't really afford it.

The 2012 I'm looking at is the same grey metallic that you have in your signature. Would you of purchased it without the warranty and 10,000 miles on it for the price I quoted above?

That's a tough question.. I'm not sure. I plan on keeping my Genesis until I have to scrap it, so the insurance was rather important to me.

I'm thinking the same, I plan on having it 10 years or so. It's going to be a fancy family wagon of sorts. But that 5,000 dollar difference might cover any repairs over the years though unless anyone tells me differently...I guess I'm waiting for someone to tell me some $5,000 horror story of having to rebuild the engine or something to convince me otherwise.

edit: so in other words not sure if the warranty is worth the $5,000 difference vs buying a new one straight up

You should be able to figure out yourself if the car has enough headroom for you with seat adjusted the way you need it.

Personally, I would be a little leery about not getting the extended drivetrain warranty on a 2012 because of the new GDI engine feature. Of course, that assumes you will keep it past the 5 year / 60K mile warranty period that you will receive.

If you wait until the 2013's come out shortly, you may be able to get a new 2012 for less than you think (or at least the used one you are looking at may be cheaper). Just remember that it is being sold as a used car, and all used car prices are negotiable. I would check the estimated wholesale and retail prices for a used car like that (not sure which websites have the most accurate info). In some cases you can add on the extended factory warranty for about $1K, and I am sure they will be willing to take at least $1K less than the asking price.

You would think headroom would be something I could figure out myself, but right now I am sitting differently then I normally would because of my shoulder injury. I am sitting kinda strange so I was curious what other healthier taller guys thought of the base model. I'm doing rehab right now so I'm hoping this isn't an issue shortly... but I'm hoping to buy a car while I'm doing my rehab.

I plan on having the car for 7+ years at least. This will be a big rare purchase for me so I'm hoping it will last a while. I'm a bit leery also, I think I'll take your advice and be patient on the 2012 models and see if there are any left after the turn of the year. In my best case scenario I am hoping the 2014 model is awesome but super expensive, making the 2013 model right for the picking :D.

Really appreciate the responses!

I purchased a new 2009 base model specifically because I needed the headroom. I paid cash, so could have afforded any trim level if I wanted it. It was very difficult to find a nice car without a sunroof (even loaded Camry's and Accord's have them as standard). However, there are some people taller than me who fit into a Genesis with a Sunroof, so it just depends on the seat rake as you noted. I don't see how we can help you figure it out any better than you can by sitting in the car at a dealer and see if you can adjust the seat to your liking. You also need to pay attention to the steering wheel position, since the base model does not have even a manual telescoping adjustment (just up or down).

Regarding the warranty, the price of a used car is negotiable, so see if they can throw in a Hyundai factory extended 10 year / 100K mile bumper-to-bumper Platinum warranty, which should cost them less than $1000. This is even better than the 10 year / 100K mile powertrain warranty only available to original owners of a new Hyundai.

FWIW - I'm a hair under 6'5" and have plenty of head room, with a sunroof.

Deleted some posts due to bickering. Quick summary: Height isn't the only factor in determining head room. Some people's butts are thicker, some people's abdomens are longer, legs shorter, etc. Grow up guys.

It's at a Mercedes dealership, could they still purchase the warranty for me? It must of been a trade in or something.

Like you said pretty much any car with a sun roof is too short for me. I tried every Toyota including tundras at the dealership and don't fit comfortably in any of them sunroof or not. All acuras are out as well. i actually do fit ok in the new accord and altima but their base models without a sunroof aren't as nice as the genesis :D

There was no need to delete my post (I made no personal attacks) where I also explained that the angle of the seat back makes a big difference, and the OP said he requires his seat back to be rather upright, for reasons he explained.

Not sure, but I don't think Mercedes dealer can sell the official Hyundai extended Warranty, but you can go to a Hyundai dealer and see if you can buy one there.

I heard that the 2013 Accord has less headroom than the 2012, but I did find that the 2008-2012 Accord had about the most headroom of any car I could find, and almost bought one in 2009. But the Honda dealer also owned a Hyundai dealership right next door, so just for grins I walked over to the Hyundai dealership and ended up buying a Genesis.

You were at worst calling him fat, or at best being indelicate. Either way, I thought it best to remove your comment. No need to be over-sensitive about it.

Exactly the opposite. If he is 6'5" and has no head room problem, then he probably has a skinny rear-end (and maybe long legs which don't enter into the calculation of car headroom). I am the fat guy.

I made no personal comments about him at all. I made a comment about the his post, that it did not take into consideration all of the necessary factors to determine if a particular individual has adequate headroom.

I am a shade over 6'-6", thin with a long back. We purchased a 09 premium used and love it. My fitting in the front and back seats was a factor in purchase. I clear the sun roof with ease. I raised the passenger seat 1.25 inches. I would like a bit more but this is the best mid point for leg and head room comfort for me. In the back seat if I sit very straight the hair on my head brushes the headliner. Ours is a may 08 build date. we live in Western Ne. where the roads can be a bit rough. My wife and I have no problem with the ride. Test drive it on some rough streets.

I am 6'6" and now am on my second Genesis sedan (both 3.8). It provides the best legroom and headroom and seat comfort of any car I have ever owned, and I have had all the luxury brands over the years. Plus the value of features/ride quality for the price is unmatched. Am I a fan, or what.

The 2012 Hyundai Genesis sedan has the following headroom:
  • 40.4" without sunroof (base model only)
  • 37.7" with sunroof (all other trim models)
If you look at specs for other cars, this about average. Actual headroom depends on seat angle, but the above figures use a standard methodology so they are comparable to other cars.

A 2012 Honda Accord has the following headroom:
  • 41.4" without sunroof (LX models or below)
  • 39.0" with sunroof (EX Models)
All specifications listed above for the Genesis and Accord are using the Comparison Tool on the Hyundai website. I believe that interior dimensions are certified by the EPA, but not 100% sure.

As mentioned previously, many tall people have long legs and average torso, or tilt their seat more so it is less upright, which can make anecdotal comments about headroom misleading when one is sitting in a car seat.

The Genesis does have excellent leg room front and rear, almost 2" more than Accord. However, on a base trim Genesis there is no telescope control on the steering column, so that makes the front legroom somewhat less useful (if you move the seat back too far then the steering wheel is too far away).

Bottom line is the OP has some unique requirements, apparently due to some back problems, and needs his seat fairly upright, which reduces the amount of available headroom.
