Battery in 2016 G80

Have had no problem with my battery till yesterday. Always starts right up. I last drove it Xmas and now completely dead. Was reading 4 volts. I tried using a battery minder overnight and only got to 10 volts, but put a meter on and watched it, it's slowly loosing charge. Hooked up a 2 amp charger and same thing. So then set it for starting, max 50 amps, starter clicked a bunch of times, battery light showed on dash. So my question is do these AGM batteries just die? Only 2-3 years old. Is there any known current drain problems on the Genesis? Anybody else replacing batteries prematurely? Just a side note, seems some battery minders are for AGM while some aren't.

Yes car batteries just die without warning, been that way for 80+ years. One time they work the next time they don’t.

Translating the battery manufacturer page from Korean states the battery maker only warranties the AGM105L-DIN battery for 12 months.

I believe Hyundai/Genesis covers it under the 5/60k basic warranty. Check with your dealer.

I’m going to call them tomorrow. I read in the warranty pamphlet that it’s supposedly covered. I had know idea they could crap out in a year. Almost makes me want to buy the $220 platinum battery! Thanks for the info.

If you have an Advanced Auto close by, they have their AGM battery for around $200 plus there is a 25% off coupon. They will help you install it as well, for free.

If memory serves, winter is the hardest time on a battery. The replacement AGM Interstate battery from the dealer goes for over $300.

Not sure how long the discount is for. Swing by ANY parts store and they have the battery/alternator tester you can use for FREE.

As for the original battery, I'm betting it is outside the warranty (1st year fully covered, after that it is prorated).

Way out of warranty lol I’m not expected it to be covered. I’d rather not have what happened to @Nardly happen to me though. May buy it and keep it around.

FWIW The battery in my Lexus RCF failed 3 times in 3 years, Lexus warranty covered it each time. but same behavior worked when I started it in the morning and drove to work, didn't work when I left work.

luckily in all cases I was able to jump it with a portable booster battery (I have this one: https://www.amazon.com/DBPOWER-1800...ords=40000mAh+Portable+Car+Jump+Starter&psc=1)

and drive to the dealer and get a battery on my way home from work.

Don't have much faith in OEM batteries, as long as they are covered under warranty I will use them, outside of that I will get a decent battery, same with OEM spec tires.

Sadly all manufacturers use the cheapest garbage for consumables on a vehicle to lower the production costs and raise the profit margin. Tires, Brake pads, batteries, etc. all OEM are usually garbage and short lived when compared to their aftermarket counterparts.

not wise, batteries don't tend to last when sitting on a shelf. Most AGM batteries lose about 4%-6% of their capacity per year if unused and stored above 70°, you need to load up the battery on a regular basis and then recharge with a proper AGM charger if it is sitting on a shelf.

It would only be for a month or two. I plan on changing it out soon. $50 off is enticing.

I thought you meant long term.


I would advise charging it with an AGM charger before putting it in the car though..

I wasn't sure, I didn't have my book handy.. I know on other makes/models I have had it covered under the original B2B warranty time frame.

After more research these battery minders will not restore a battery that's less than 10 volts. They are for maintaining a battery in a vehicle that is not driven often. I hooked my old Sears charger set up at 2 amps and let it charge about 12 hours. Started right up. The alternator is charging at 14.5 volts. Let it idle 15 minutes, drove about 25 minutes and all seems fine. I did cut off the auto trunk open, don't trust it since I walk by it while working in my garage. I'll check the voltage tomorrow to see if I'm holding charge. If it's low I'll hook up an amp meter on it to see if it's drawing more than 20 milliamps

FYI. The original battery in a 2015 is covered 3 year, unlimited miles. However, it's only 100% covered for the first year. Year 2 and 3, Hyundai pays for labor, and 25% of the battery, the rest is on you. 2016 and newer, it's covered 100% for 3yr/36k miles.
