  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Eight Chicago winters and my original battery turns the engine over like it was new......Is this unusual????.....On top of it, for the last year, the car has only been used for "short" trips (I only put on 2000 miles in 2020). I don't use a "battery keeper", but the car has been garage kept, since day one.
PS. I got 10 years out of the battery in my old Elantra.

You’re overdue for some bad news, just when you least expect it. Stranded while on vacation. Maybe in the middle of the night when you need a quick run to the hospital emergency room. Why chance it for the small cost of a new battery? Changed your oil lately?

I have my oil changed like clockwork. (every 3000 miles) I've never had a battery die without giving me some warning. If I ever hear slow cranking, it'll be time for a new battery.

It doesn’t always send you a telegram. Mine that have died failed without warning.

Yeah, good luck with that. With all the electronics today you can end up with some headache from a dead one when you least expect it.

I'm still on my original battery. 8 yrs old this month.

Thinking about it, I took delivery of The 4.6 Gold Princess on Nov 2 2008 and sold in Dec 5 2018 without changing the battery.
The R spec White stallion battery lasted about 4 years.
The 2016 White princess battery was changed early last year. The 2015 5.0 greyhound not as of yet and appears to still have the original battery.

Maybe you are a Battery Whisperer? 🤣
No, you just have to listen to your car when it talks to you........If it's around 30 degrees and your engines cranks over slower than normal, it usually means that your battery is on it's last legs......Same for if you hear a belt slip.

Or what happens more often than not: Everything is fine, then you get out of work/out of the store/friends place/gas station/wherever, go to start it and clickclickclick.... Then nothing happens. It doesn't always warn you. You've just been very lucky.

Then I guess that I've always been lucky.

past 7 years, when they go, they go with little or no warning. My sisters car had an 8 year old car battery that dies like someone flipped a switch on it. My 4 year old battery in my wife's car gave lots of warning, and needed replaced under warranty at 4 years and 3 months. I got it replaced when it consistently lost 2 volts in a day after a steady trickle charge.

Just have a backup plan, or reasonable expectations. I'm on about 6-1/2 years, on mine, still starts perfectly. I plan to keep it till it shows signs, but I also have a solid plan B (multiple cars).

It is really pot luck, however 2 out 5 dealers around me, know that part of my oil check service they do a battery check and make a note of the reading.
But to everyone’s point, I had the same issue with the 2016 it was fine that morning, just died while on a grocery run, called the concierge, which they jump started it and drove straight to the dealer to get the battery replaced.

I have a solid Plan A. Replace it before winter #5. It has never failed me. Your Plan B has though.

Most of my life I didn't have a solid plan B, so I did the same, I replaced at 5-6 years even when it was still working OK. It really comes down to risk/reward ratios : How much does it cost to be late to work or stuck in a store parking lot vs the cost of a battery that needs replaced sooner or later anyway.

I think I paid about $250. It didn’t break me.

Today I replaced my battery on my '16 3.8. No warning that I've associated with battery failure: ie slow cranking. But it did self lock itself for a few weeks in the garage before the failure, so maybe that is a warning signal? I went out to go somewhere and it was dead. Put my battery charger on it, and the digital readout said 6 volts charging for a few minutes and I thought "Oh boy, that's not good!" and then it flashed "bad bat". I got a 3year battery at Autozone for $200. They have a $18 core fee. 4 nuts and a vent tube so it's not that hard, but the tube didn't feel like it went in far enough. I pulled a plug out before putting it in and there was an unplugged vent hole on the other side, so I put the plug in there. It's just that the old battery had that vent tube in a lot further and a lot tighter. I twisted and tapped with a hammer and it would not go further! Maybe it's good enough!?!

My back up vehicle is a '94 K1500 with 61,000 miles that I have a battery isolator on, so when I want to use it, I open the hood and turn the battery on. Works very well!
