  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

So I have done a fair bit of wrenching in the past and was wondering if anyone had experience using the Autel MK 808. I'm tempted to get one but I am wondering what its capabilities are. For example, can I get into the head unit to add gridlines for my backup camera? Can it diagnose Canbus issues, dead modules, seat modules, pgs modules, etc. Can it communicate and do diagnosis on most of the modules on my 2015 5.0, etc? Buying the GDS is not an option and I am not buying the $119 version made in China.

The MK808 can't support anything outside of the basic diagnostic and service modes. If you're looking for programming, you have to get the MS908 range of product. Even then, programming support for Hyundai is very sketchy, you'll frequently go down a menu chain and it will just fail for an unexplained reason.

Why so against the $119 Chinese version? It's identical to the actual GDS VCI module, although you have to have a Windows 7 laptop or tablet to run the GDS software. Don't try GDS-Mobile as it's just...bad...especially for anything older.

Also, no diagnostic software will correctly diagnose dead modules, as they tend to break the canbus network when they die. Dead module diagnostics requires thorough diagnostic training and skill, beyond what the computer assisted diagnostics provide.

This is very helpful, thanks. I guess I just want to be a Hyundai technician. I have spent 30+ years fixing a variety of vehicles. I have had B5 A4s, B5 Passats, Odyssey, Crown Vics, Jettas, a '96 Oldsmobile, VW Rabbits, an Accord, a Mazda Protege, etc. Other than an engine or transmission teardown or body work, I've probably done it.
On all these vehicles, I felt like I could get around the need to use a very expensive scan tool, but the Genesis is so freaking complicated! I mean, there's a module for the seat warmer. Seriously?

Do you know of any online classes I could take specific to diagnostics? I might just spring for the Chinese GDS and buy a cheap laptop and install Windows 7. Every time I drive near the Hyundai dealership, I feel the dollars flying out of my pocket!

you want a windows 7 laptop, shoot me a PM, I have a dozen of them my company just upgraded and they are headed to the recycling bin.. they all work just old and slow, they are 6-10 years old.

If you've serviced other cars with other electronics, you probably have the prerequisite knowledge. That training tidbit was just to scare off people who think the computer will solve all their issues. Basically, if you have a dead module, you already know what's not functioning and you'll know what you can't access with the diagnostic computer (self solving diagnostics).

I have a spare GDS kit if you're interested.

Old and slow is perfect for GDS software.

Hi guys, I am also looking for some tool for reprogramming KIA/Hyundai but from what I found GDS doesn't support any vehicle newer than 2016.. Is that true? What would be the alternative for newer models?

correct. You need GDS-Mobile for 17+ vehicles.

Alternatively you can use an Autel MS908 with valid subscription (though you probably won’t get software updates without a supporting Hyundai J2534 subscription.

What's the cost of Autel MS908 vs GDS Mobile or Tablet?
Do you guys have a URL or a web link to buy GDS Tablet? Does it allow me to reset adaptive values of the transmission?

Thank you
