  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Morning all. After a close call in a parking lot yesterday, I'm finally pulling the trigger on a dashcam for my '24 G80. I'm looking for something that is high-quality, discreet, and has a reliable parking mode. Don't want a bunch of wires hanging around. What's the go-to setup for our cars? I've seen things about BlackVue and Thinkware.

You're looking at the right brands. I have the BlackVue DR970X-2CH (front and rear) in my GV70 and the quality is phenomenal. It's 4K in the front, so you can easily make out license plates. The unit itself is very slim and tucks neatly behind the rearview mirror. For a clean install, you'll want to hardwire it.

How was the hardwiring process? That's the part that makes me nervous. I've read about tapping into the fuse box but am hesitant about messing with the electronics and potentially voiding the warranty.

This is a common concern. The key is to use a hardwiring kit with fuse taps. This allows you to draw power from an existing fuse slot without cutting or splicing any factory wires. When you're ready to sell or turn in the car, you can remove the taps and it's like it was never there. Dealers are generally fine with this as long as the installation is done properly and doesn't cause an issue. I installed a Thinkware U1000 in my G70 in about an hour. Plenty of YouTube videos to guide you.

Another option is an OBD-II power adapter. It's even easier—literally plug-and-play into the OBD-II port under the steering wheel and it provides power for parking mode.

The OBD-II adapter sounds like a great compromise. Does it have any impact on the car's battery life when using parking mode? That's my other big concern, coming out to a dead battery because the camera was recording all night.

Both hardwire kits and OBD-II adapters have built-in voltage cutoff settings. You can configure them (usually via a smartphone app) to shut the dashcam off if your car's battery voltage drops below a certain level, say 12.2V. This ensures you always have enough power to start the car.

For those who want extended parking mode without touching the car's battery at all, look into a dedicated dashcam battery pack like the BlackVue B-124X. The pack charges when you drive, and then powers the dashcam exclusively when the car is off. It's the safest, but also the most expensive, option.

Just to offer a different perspective, I went with the FITCAMX. It was installed by the dealer before I took delivery. It's not 4K, but the integration is seamless, and I have peace of mind knowing it's covered under the vehicle's accessory warranty. It's a solid "set it and forget it" option if you don't want to do the research and installation yourself.

This is incredibly helpful, thank you all. I think I'm leaning toward a Thinkware or BlackVue system with an OBD-II power cable. Seems like the best balance of features, ease of installation, and safety for the vehicle's systems. Really appreciate the detailed feedback!

I cannot imagine that this camera is the "Official" dashcam accessory. That camera does not seem good at all. I cannot even find the Vivaldi web site. It may have been sold to you and installed by the dealer, and serviced by the dealer, but there are much better cameras. At least the camera that is connected to the link you posted.

I was distrated when I wrote that. I meant to say FitCamX. I changed it. The link is auto generated.

This worked on my 21 GV80, but from what I understand, they changed something in the mirror in the 25's so there is an additional pin in the harness.
I am not sure bout the 24's.
They don't list cars but while looking at the item on amazon, go the place where they ask questions and put in you model. you will get some worthless info, Then click on "view related customers questions and reviews" When I put in GV80 there were a bunch of people that said it worked. So I purchased it.

If your ready to put it in, just buy it and if it does not work, send it back. It takes about 5 minutes to install this thing. There are videos on the web on how to do it.

That is a nice fitting one on the Ford they show, looks OEM.

The Dongar worked on my 2024 G90, I would guess it works on the G80 as well.

I've had dashcams for over 14 years in all our vehicles, I've tried lots of different makes and models and would always suggest you avoid the cheap ones and stick with branded/recognised ones.

Personally I've used Viofo for the past 6-7 years and they have been excellent, I currently have the A129 Pro duo 4k, installed in my G80 and our other 3 cars (wife and 2 kids) easy to hardwire ime.
