If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Hello,

I own a Hyundai Genesis 2015 - GDI engine 3.8L.

- Is BG MOA safe on it?
- Is BG EPR safe?
- How different is the BG GDI Intake Valve Cleaner from CRC GDI Intake Valve Cleaner?

MOA: Motor Oil Additive to increase the oil lifetime
EPR: Engine Performance Restoration that is used before the oil change for 10 minutes to clean carbon off of the piston rings
Intake Valve cleaner is used to clean carbon deposits from the intake valves.

Let me know your thoughts!

Thanks,
Husam

Don’t do MOAs for oil life. Just buy better oil.

For any cleaner just follow the instructions, GDI cleaners need some “soak” time and a 2nd person to ensure proper RPM and distribution is maintained.

What about EPR (that removes carbon deposits off of the piston rings)? Intake valve Cleaners such as CRC are also recommended.

These cars don't suffer from carbon buildup on the rings. That's something that much older high mileage engines suffer from due to running low quality oils.

Valve cleaner is necessary though since the PCV system puts oil on the valves that isn't washed off by a fuel injector. I'd recommend treatment every 25k simply because the buildup can require multiple treatments to clean off if delayed.

Thank you! Got it.

Husam, my brother: I use both BG MOA PN115 (for GDI engines) and Valvoline Modern Engine GDI 2012 New Full Synthetic oil together. When I switched to Valvoline full synthetic the engine quieted and when I then added BG MOA PN115 with the full synthetic oil, the engine became even quieter, smoother. The above recommendation came from my personal mechanic.

Thank you for sharing your experience with MOA.

Carbon buildup is a problem with these engines. Just look at mine. Granted its high mileage. Over 150k miles on. Always Mobil 1 Synthetic and still intake valves look horrible. PXL_20201114_010044344.webpPXL_20201111_021537279.webpPXL_20201114_005939900.webpPXL_20201114_005949123.webp

By spraying Gumout valve cleaner into cylinders that were closed and leaving it overnight cleaned them up real nice. Did have to repeat the process a few times. Hi, Origin:

You did this yourself? Or your mechanic with you? Is this technically challenging, expensive, and so on? How long? Total cost? I would like to talk to my mechanic about this later (my Genesis has 53,000 miles on it). He installed an oil catch can this year to help with oil buildup. Thank you for your information.

These are all DIY results. Its a little challenging. If an oil change was a 1 or 2 out of 10 this procedure is 6 or 7 out of 10 i would say. But its doable. I wasnt really looking to do this but i was replacing spark plugs and when i saw the carbon buildup thru the manifold i knew i couldnt just turn a blind eye, put everything back together and call it a day. Mine has over 150k miles on the odometer. Coolant needs to be drained. In short air intake, windshield wipers and cowl, two "panels" between the engine and the firewall and intake manifold need to be removed. Throttle body needs to be unbolted and a few hoses need to be disconnected. If you ziploc bag and label all the bolts you will make life easier for yourself. Took me about a week. I was in no rush. I spent extra $$ on useless CRC valve cleaner and brake cleaner before i found Gumout. Its under $5 at my local Levine autoparts store. Spray gumout in there, let it do its thing over night. Scrub/clean with a brush while the liquid is still there. Get the cleaning agent out of there with a plastic turkey baster and wipe with paper towel. Use air compressor to blow any debris out. Obviously all of this was done first to the closed cylinders. Once you get desired results turn engine clockwise to close remaining dirty cylinders and open the clean ones. Its probably a pretty good idea to tape over clean intake valves once youre done so nothing gets in your engine.

But with 53000 miles, unless you notice power loss i wouldnt do it. I would say wait until its time to replace sparkplugs. You can see how bad it is when you have half of the part off for the spark plug service. If you need any more info pm me.

Hi Origin,
How many cans of GumOut did you use?

Thanks,

Cant say for sure. 5 or 6 cans i think.
Did you just let it sit and then blow out the gunk or did you scrape? Great info btw, thanks.

Edit: Just read the part about scrapping/brushing while the fluid is in there.

Sure thing. One day i will try to post a detailed step by step tutorial.
Origin _G80 thank you for the information. A step by step diy tutorial would be great. I have 168 000kms or slightly over 100,000 miles . So I would definetly look out for the tutorial. The before pics were superb. Did you notice any mileage Performance gains after GM treatment, valve cleaning.pls share.

In all honesty even after the cleaning the car was still sluggish (noticable power loss compared to when it was newer). I was planning to do another treatment deeper into the engine but sold the car. My best advice would be an oil catch can and regular engine treatment.
