  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

the other day i sprayed my front and rear wings matte black. for this i used plasti dip because it seems like alot of people blackout their emblems with it and its easily removable if i didnt like the way it turned out. for people who dont know, plasti dip comes in a spray can or a can and is actually a rubber and not a paint. so there is no priming or sanding, and if you dont like the way it turns out it can be peeled off.

they didnt come out exactly the way i wanted them to but for $7 it cant be beat.

I like that. Looks sharp to me and when I trade for my next Genesis I'll probably do the same thing. Like things that are different.

thanks. i just wish it came out a little bit darker

If you sealed it with something that gave a shiny gloss, I think it'd look even better. But a good look!

thanks. i've heard that if you spray clearcoat or any paint over it, it will get messed up somehow. this was pretty much a test run. the reason i used plasti dip is because i can peel it off anytime i want to without ruining my wings. i didnt know it was going to be matte until i was done. i will keep it for now or until i get tired of the look

very awesome. esp the front. i wonder how awesome it would look if you black matted the non chrome parts of the grill to match.!

thanks. im thinking about re-doing it sometime soon because i was rushing when i did it and didnt feel like waiting for each coat to dry completely, therefore its rough and bumpy. also it rained hard about 5-10 mins after. so i might consider the grill when i redo them. i was planning on getting my grill painted anyways but if this turns out good i might not.

This would look really hot on an R-Spec. The grill, front lights and wheels all have dark smoke grey inserts and that would really have a cool impact on the car.

+1 - especially the black on black.

Love the black wings, but they would be even better in gloss. That's something I would put on my car. Nice job!

I don't know how much more black these might be but for anyone who wants black and has yet to already re-badge their car, check these out:

It's interesting to note that they say the emblem is powerdercoated. The emblem is plastic with a light chrome vacuum plating and powerdercoat melts at 400 degrees. Either they are misrepresenting the finish, or the emblem is now metal, or the powdercoating is a low temp variant system.

Either way, I like the matt black finish but a gloss version would be a nice addition too! :D

Cheers!

Did you spray them on or off the car?

right on the car. no damage was done to the paint or clearcoat. Im going to re-do them soon because i didnt put enough coats on

How did you tape off the car??

just mask off a good amount of the car to prevent overspray. you dont need to cover up exactly around where you want to spray (as a matter of fact, this actually makes it harder and the results come out worse). this can be sprayed directly on the car and peeled off with no damage, (another reason why i love this stuff). but when it oversprays to distant areas where the coat is very light, it is very difficult to get off and required rubbing compound.

ill redo them this weekend and write up a DIY with pics or maybe even a video.

I actually did it about 2 months ago. i did the entire grill but i dont know if i should leave it like this or remove the parts covering the chrome. at night it looks really agressive, especially with my red parking lights on.

Can you do a video? I would *LOVE* to see how you did this.

I like the grill, but I personally think the front would look better without the wings. I like the fact that this is reversible - I might do my grill and, if it doesn't turn out to my satisfaction, undo it.
