  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I’ve noticed that there is a black soot around the exhaust tips even after cleaning them every couple of weeks. 2015 Genesis 3.8 sedan With 60k miles. I know it’s a GDI engine. I have a local shop change the oil every 4K miles with Mobil 1 and only use top tier Amoco gas per the owners manual. is the soot an indication that trouble is brewing? I aM still under 10/100 warranty and Dealers here are largely inept.

It's fairly normal, the exhaust system tends to cool down the exhaust mass until the carbon precipitates onto the exhaust pipe with moisture instead of just blowing right out.

The air gap between the mufflers and tips only increases the deposit quantity. I suspect if the tips were welded on, the rate of soot accumulation would be less.

As mentioned by Suburbazine, this is normal. Happens to my car as well.

If you ever floor the engine and see a dark cloud behind you, don't worry, it's probably not unburnt fuel or oil going out the tailpipe (at least not much). You're shaking loose the prodigious amounts of carbon buildup from the resonators to the mufflers.

If you are worried about oil consumption, pull one of the spark plugs and see if it has dark black soot. As for the exhaust, mine has black soot on it as well. I pulled a spark plug and there was minimal carbon black.

Black soot is unfortunately normal. Had it in all of my 3 Hyundais. Even on a brand new Sonata. I just wiped them down every week or so (I was doing a lot of driving) and that took care of it. Takes only 1 minute to do and it will help to keep them clean before it will burn onto the surface and you will have to use something better than wet cloth. Driving style didn't really matter.
