  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Genesis Model Type
2G Genesis Sedan (2015-2016)
4 days ago, I started my 2015 Genesis 5.0 (v-8) sedan, and began driving when suddenly the oil can light came on, and I noticed white smoke billowing out of my exhaust pipes. Then the car began driving sputtering and the front began shaking/bumping and miss firing. Since I keep up regularly with my maintenance and only take it to Hyundai dealership/service center, and it only has 28K miles on it, I was suprised the oil light would be flashing. So, I pulled over at the next gas station and checked the oil, it looked to be slightly low (about a quart), so I added it as recommended by the manual and checked it again. It looked good, so started it up, and it continued to billow white smoke that smelled like burning oil. I then turned it around and parked it in my driveway, called the dealership and had it towed to the dealership service area. They have had it this past week, and state that a cylinder is not firing or compressing. They are submitting the information to Hyundai and will find out if they need to take down the engine. Has anyone else had similar problems? I've only owned the car about 2-1/2 years, and bought it new from the dealership. It did have the water leak in the rear floor boards and I had it repaired about 1 year ago, otherwise it has been a very good car.

I'm sorry... that is not a common issue and sad to see. Loss of compression in a cylinder along with billowing oil smoke could be a big problem. Hopefully the dealer gave you a nice rental while your car is out. Keep us posted, I'd be interested to know what the failure was.

At first they wanted me to pay for the rental.... I said no way! They gave me a Frontier truck as a rental- it was the last vehicle they had available. So, that's what I'm driving for now!

Sounds like rings are gone on at least one cylinder.

Does the extended warranty replace the engine if it is damaged?

I'm not sure, to be honest. Did you have any weird symptoms before?

No weird symptoms! The car has been driving well, and was almost due for the next maintenance. We do live in Northern CA and the car was parked in the driveway and we had a lot of smoke and soot from the wild fires over the past few weeks, including white ash residue on the car in the mornings.

Yes of course. The original warranty will cover engine replacement as well. Take a big deep breath, you're covered.

Suze, did they say no compression in one cylinder, or it was not firing or both. Just trying to understand, so I'm clear about what you've commented on? The extended warranty is a bumper to bumper warranty. So everything that goes amiss is covered.

Ok thanks. Probably a piston ring.

That I know of, it's not something very many owners have experienced at all but it does happen. Nothing is perfect and I mean nothing. Don't be overly concerned or worried. They will replaced the engine not just repair it. They don't repair just one cylinder and all is good. They have to tear it down, see the problem, report a possible weakness and then replace it entirely.

Thank you for the info! From the initial information they gave me, that was also my suspicion of the problem. They told me yesterday, it had "no compression in one of the cylinders." Of course, I still am waiting to hear back from Hyundai to find out the "final diagnostics"and then their plan to remedy the problems! Hopefully, I will be reporting back with better news!

If there is no compression its most definitely will be a new motor. They won't waste the time to tear it down machine it and reassemble. If they said a cylinder isn't firing could likely that cylinder was washed out and wore out the rings.

Dumb question, are Hyundai engines known for oil consumption? I know VW, Subaru and a few GM products do.

I've had five Hyundai/Genesis cars over the last 12 years and never added oil between changes at 5000 to 7500 miles.

No, you may see a slight increase at times due to oil dilution but definitely not an oil consumer.

It has always ran very well, did not use oil, nor burn it prior to this situation. It always ran smooth and was a very nice ride!

Thx everyone! Have any of you seen the 2013 Elantra with 1 million miles!

What oil weight did the dealership use for the oil changes? 5w-20 or 5w-30?

How often did you change the oil?
