Borla or Magna Flow

Hey all

Been reading some of the exhaust threads and it seems the Magna Flows are more favorable than the Borla.

I like the price points of the Magna Flows as they are 300-400 dollars cheaper than the Borla but what I am really wanting to avoid is an abundant amount of droning at freeway speed. From my readings it seems there is a way but what I have yet to figure out is which system is better when it comes to droning.

From my point of view, it seems the Borla are louder than the Magna but seem to be okay when it comes to droning...am I wrong?

I can't speak for the Borla system, but the magnaflow is plenty loud at WOT. The Magnaflow also drones alot below 2200 RPM. I have ordered some resonators for my Magnaflow, to reduce drone. Will report back after install, with brand, part number and results.

I have the R-spec version of the Magnaflow on my V6, which has built in resonators. With my cat deletes it drones noticeably on the highway. It might be less with the cats still on, but from what I hear you need to have the Dynomax VT's installed on any catback if you want to totally get rid of cruising drone.

I love a good sounding exhaust, but DON'T like drone. I've modified my MagnaFlow setup a couple of times. The last mod has made me happy. Drone is very minimal. I had my installer replace the factory H pipe with a MagnaFlow X-Pipe muffler, which reduces undesired frequencies. The exhaust tone also improved slightly with this muffler as well. I've been meaning to do another video, just haven't got the time lately. I tried resizing the image, but no matter how small I make it I still get error messages

Scott, are you using IrfanView?

You can adjust the quality of the newly cropped/resized file to meet the file size requirements for this forum. The Q loss will not be noticeable.

Done. I installed (2) Vibrant 1141 2.5" Ultra Quiet Resonators, in the Magnaflow cat back system for the 2010 4.6. They are straight-thru resonators, installed mainly to reduce drone. I'm pretty pleased with it. Reduced drone to manageable level (about an 80% reduction in drone). WOT is also quieter. Not sure if I lost any HP, if I did, it wasn't much. I'm satisfied with the exhaust now and probably will leave it like this.

Good to hear. I am considering a number of options, one of which is a full vibrant system (resonators and mufflers). It has been exceedingly difficult to find any experience at all with these products on our car.

Has anyone installed the cat back Magna Flow exhaust on an R-Spec and if so do you get drone? I noticed that the same system for the 4.6 has no resonators but it appears in the diagram that the 5.0 system does. I despise the OEM exhaust and really want to make a change but do not want to put down $1,200 and have a system I am unhappy with as much as the OEM exhaust.

Hey everyone. New to the forum , but, would like to get my $.02 in on this discussion. I bought my '13 Genny R spec in March '14. On the test drive and on the way home I decided the car was annoyingly quite. I immediately researched exhaust systems and decided to go with the Magna
flow due to the availability and got a good price from my local shop.

Sure it has the obvious drone at lower speeds in traffic, but, under throttle and coasting down it has the sound a performance V8 should. I kept the OEM center section in case a larger resonator was needed, but, I don't think I'll put it to use.

Overall, I'm happy with the choice and would recommend it to others. Now, if I could only get the brakes to work properly.

I'm pretty sure there's nothing wrong with the OEM brakes, they just don't overwhelm me with confidence.

I'm sure an upgrade to EBC pads and perhaps braided steel lines will do the trick.

Any input there would be greatly appreciated although that is a matter for a different thread.

What tires are you running? I hope you are running a summer compound, which would be the best upgrade, especially for braking. Using an all season tire with "bigger and better" brakes would just induce the ABS to kick in sooner (and ESC sooner during acceleration) but not stopping the vehicle any shorter distance nor inspiring more braking confidence.

Also here is some info about EBC brakes for the R Spec - Member Driv200 has tracked his R Spec and the following is a conversation of me asking him about his EBC brakes and stainless brake lines..

Scott, sure can. I was probably a bit harsh on my critique. I spent $800 and expected race car performance. With new fluid & race spec brake pads, I had a strong brake pedal, but after 2 laps of race level braking stress, they faded. I had to let them cool. Returned very quickly and worked well, but the car is heavy and brakes can only do so much. For street use, top notch. For track use, very good. They look amazing! I am very happy with them for my daily
needs. Expected better fade resistance on track. Hope this helps. Andy

Me again. Currently running the OEM Conti All Season VRs on the 19" R spec wheels. I'm not likely to put the barge on the track, but, would like a better initial feel when applying the brakes.

Anyone who has driven one of these monsters will testify you catch yourself going well over posted speeds without a second thought. Some additional "woah-there" would be good. I had EBC Red Stuff pads on my G8 and thought the difference was amazing. Initial feel and fade resistance were outstanding.

I'm hoping for similar results on the Genny.

My deepest apologies for turning this into a brake pad thread. The initial topic was Borla vs. Magnaflow.

BTW-Maybe it's just me, but, as I'm getting miles on the system, the drone is more and more un-noticeable. Now, if someone would just produce a tuner module for the awful transmission response, we'd be on to something.

2 month follow-up on the Magnaflow cat-back system. Best money I've ever spent on a car. Still drones a little below two grand but sings like Pavarotti under aggressive acceleration and screams like Ted Nugent at WOT.

If you want to get noticed, put exhaust on your Rspec.
