Boston to Toronto, RT, 27.2 mpg

I just returned from a week's vacation transporting four adults and our luggage to Toronto. My car is a 2016 Ultimate (V8). The Monroney sticker says to expect 23 mpg, but I'm happy to report that I got 27.2 on the 650 mile trip up, and 27.1 on the trip down. Around town in Toronto I was closer to 16 mpg with lots of short trips to restaurants and sightseeing (and horrendous stop and go traffic in a city which makes Boston look deserted).
About half the trip each way was with the Cruise set at 70 by me, or 73 by my friend. My gut feel is that this engine prefers a speed that's in the mid sixties and I believe that I could get well into the high 28's if I kept the speed down a bit. That's from my experience on a few shorter trips to NJ. It's hard to say because there's a heck of a lot more congestion going to NJ. The trip between Albany and Buffalo is on a desolate NY Thruway.
Prior to leaving I inflated my tires above the usual 30 psi to 34 psi. Refills were all 87 Octane from whatever was available although I usually use 93 from a TopTier station. I noticed one Toronto station had 94 octane, the highest we see around here is 93.

Hi bug. I'm not a hypermiler, but I do aim to extract every last mpg that's reasonable. I like the 'smart' cruise, unfortunately it is not conducive to obtaining the best mpg. The human brain is better at determining whether the brakes need to be applied when someone cuts back into your lane, or when you are moving back into a lane when a car ahead is not the "safest" distance ahead. Smart cruise is biased towards safety, as it should be, but if you want mpg and you are otherwise a good driver, leave the cruise off.
There are sections on the Thruway which must be hundreds of miles that are basically flatlands. Not quite Kansas, but a lot less hilly than in NH where I live. That kind of topography is certainly conducive to extracting the best performance. Unfortunately it's also extremely boring driving so having the ability to play a movie for the rear seat occupants was a much liked feature. I showed some 40's hits, kitschy but fun.

Thanks for sharing this info. I own 2014 Equus signature and I consistently average 25/26 on highways and 16-18 in the city with 4 passengers (family of 4) and loaded trunk. I have been super happy so far with the car. Plenty of power, quite cabin, great pickup....smooth ride.. great audio system. no repairs needed so far with 28k miles on it so far...just the regular oil changes, wiper blades etc which dealer has been servicing without any charges to me. Also has been leaving a loaner car in the driveway when it's servicing time. Car infotainment is a bit dated...wish there was android or apple play options.

Well then you'll be doing 90% of my trip. Once you get past Albany you'll be wishing you had an autonomous car, definitely nap time. Watch your speed on the NYT. The cops hide in the center and use laser so the only thing your fuzzbuster is going to tell you is to pull over, you've been nailed. The average speed seems to be in the 75 mph range and a friend regularly does 78 so 80+ might be the magic number. YMMV. Rest areas every 50 miles or so, most of them have very poor choices for lunch, dinner.

I'm doing 25.5 mpg (U.S.) around the outskirts of Toronto on the open highways (30 mpg UK, 9.2L/100kms Canadian) in a 2012 5.0
