If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. I have a Plat 4.6 w/ Tech
Anyone experiencing a squealing noise coming from the brakes (when applied) , ONLY when backing up?

Any ideas on what the issue is.? Major fix or a minor tweak??

I have about 2000 miles on the car. just returned from a quick trip from PA to Boston, car performed beautifully, nav, stereo, 26+ mpg.

But, I alwasy here the squeal when backing up and applying the brakes.

This is news to me. I back up every time I drive as I back into parking spaces and into my garage. The only time I have heard a squeal/squeak is after washing the car and a little rust has built up on the rotors. Would be interested in this, and what others will have to say.

I only had the problem once with squealing when backing up. It happened after I had finished washing the car. No real time for rust to build up so you can probably rule that out. It hasn't done it again even though it has been washed many times.

Always hear the squeal, or after car has been sitting for a long while? If the latter, it's glaze/rust and you should look for the thread called Brakes That Wake The Dead. More than a few of us, especially 4.6 drivers know what you're talking about and there is no fix. If the former, get thee to the dealer... Something major may be happening that none of us have experienced.

I've got about 1300km on mine (4.6), and they do it all the time in reverse when the rotors are cold. Once they warm up, they are fine. I've tried to drag the brakes in reverse to cure the situation and even tried to really heat up the brakes with panic stops while going forward at a good clip to see if the brake pads have glazed up, but they still do it. If anyone else has this, please let me know too, if there is a fix!

Moose, it sounds like you may be using reverse more than most? Is it possible you're scraping the rust off enough to prevent the buildup that causes the howling?
Just a thought.

I took the car in this afternoon for this small issue and...........the dealer found nothing wrong, which is what I expected of course.

It's not a big issue, just annoying.

Not sure what all of my backing up does to my brakes. I have never had any issues with brakes on any vehicle I have owned.

I do back up quite a bit by habit and necessity. I have a another vehicle in my driveway which makes backing into my garage much easier than backing out. I also like to back into parking spaces as I was once nearly creamed backing out of one. It's also easier to see what's coming pulling out of a parking space. The rear-view camera does help when I do have to pull into a parking space. The viewing angle from the camera is pretty good.

Now that I think about it, for what its worth, on the afternoon I picked up my car, I backed it up, and the brakes squeeled. Car had probably been sitting for a while in the outdoor display area of the dealer, and you know how it gets humid in Florida. Put car in Drive, and drove 30 miles home.

Has never squeeled since that first day backup.

I have found that the spray-on wheel cleaners really accelerate the formation of light rust on the surface of the rotors. My Passat, Acura, Subaru, Mazda, and Hondas have all exhibited this trait. The Passat more than the others. A recently rented new Maxima also did this. That said, the Passat also is the first car I have ever had that has needed no break work at all during its first 85k miles. I believe that it is the autobahn quality breaks that magnify this squealing when slowly backing up. Once warm, there is no sound from the breaks. One thing I read on a Passat TDI forum that may help you folks is this:

Find a hill (the steeper and longer the better). Lightly apply the breaks while simultaneously giving it a little gas. This will help the pads seat. Next, find a nice deserted parking lot. Do the sam thing in reverse increasing pressure on both the breaks and gas at the same time.

I really do not think this is a serious issue and certainly not a "problem."

my gv60 performance does this a lot. only issue i have. not sure whether io complain. love the car

FWIW, I had replaced the front calipers with top of the line ceramic pads a while back on my 2012 3.8. Squealed like a Mack truck, hated it. Broke down and went to the dealer parts and got a set of OEM pads. Completely fixed the squeal issue. I'll always get only OEM pads for mine, even though they cost twice the auto parts store brand.
