Guys,
My genesis is 3 weeks old, 300 miles on the odo. One of my friends told me about letting my car break in esp brakes and speed. Never owned a new car before so i did not know about that. Is that true? Not that i abusedbit but i did show sports mode to my friends on couple of occasions but didn't pay attention to tacho, it must have been above 5000 (just guessing). What things i should not be doing esp when it is relatively new?

the biggest thing is to take it easy on the brakes for the first 500-1000 miles. probably wouldn't hurt to avoid burnouts for a thousand miles too! :D
 
I like to drive at variable speeds keeping the tack up around 3k RMP or above when possible for the first 800 miles. I definitely wouldn't let the tack get close to redline. Avoid getting on the freeway and driving at a constant speed and go easy on the brakes.

Basically, take it easy for the first thousand miles or so.

Then change the oil out and put some Mobil 1 in.

Lots of luck on finding somebody who can do it right on the 5.0 V8.

Will do. Thanks! Why do you say that about oil change. Is v8 that different from v6? How about oil changes at the dealer?
 
The car is basically broke in before it leaves the factory. Engine is broke in at 2000 RPM for 15 min long before it ever leaves the factory. Brakes need to be "bedded in" but that's done within the first 100 miles.

With the basically clean room environment the motors are built in now days, they are basically clean. Change the oil at about 500 miles to get rid of any possible wear materials from the break in.

Then drive and enjoy it like you would if there wasn't a break in. ;)

100k miles on my '04 chevy truck and no issues.

Did the same with my 600 HP blown Small block I built and no issues after 30K miles. My machinist told me long ago, "break it in" the way your going to drive it.

But I'm sure someone here will disagree with me.

With the V8, two large splash panels at the bottom have to be removed to access the filter and drain plug - many, many fasteners (a mix of plastic push pins and cap screws) are used. There are posts to the effect that panels are coming loose due to sloppy replacement. Personally, I don't even attempt to re-use the push pins - they are lousy fasteners to start with.

Also, the filter on the V8 is a short, stubby thing that is supported by two separate posts - one in the housing, and one inside the cap. One has to be careful to do it right - otherwise, you get a crushed filter - there have been some posts on that also.

If you use a Mity-Vac to suction the oil out, at least you don't have to remove the rear panel which is way back near the center of the car. This is the "Mercedes" way of removing the old oil, nowadays.
