I went to check the tire pressure on my 2012 with only 3,000 miles on it and a valve stem broke. The first 3/8" of the valve stem sheered off and the valve came out letting all the air out of the tire. Interestingly enough, the valve stem (which is integrated to the TPMS) is a very lightweight alloy, which is apparently not very strong. I figured it would have been heavier steel.
The dealer replaced the valve stem under warranty and said they have seen this issue before but with vehicles in the 30 – 40K mile range. Seems like a safety issue Hyundai should have already addressed if this has happened before with cars with as little as 30 – 40K.
Be careful when inflating tires not to put any unneeded torque on the valve stem.
They put a new valve stem/TPMS and then went to program my car to accept the new TPMS. They dealer said the 2012 models do not need the car computer programmed to accept the new TPMS, it is now done automatically every time you start the car.
