  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have a 2014 first gen Genesis RSpec with the 5.0 liter (25K miles). Recently I was in an area where I could open it up a bit. I place the shifter in sport mode (triptronic?) and floored it. Acceleration was great of course with gears shifting at close to the red line and was able to reach a speed of about 135 with the distance I had on a secluded road. However, upon immediately getting out of the car and walking to the back of the vehicle I noticed a fairly strong smell that seemed like it was burning transmission fluid. Not sure about the odor but it wasn't like a regular oil smell. Anyone have any idea what this was? Should I be concerned? I normally drive on the highway and in the city mixed. I often accelerate somewhat aggressively (like for on ramps etc) so I would think that the car systems would be accustomed to some harder acceleration. Thanks in advance for any insight.

If there is no leaks, not sure how you will get the smell to come out. Trannys normally have a small vent tube on top to equalize the pressure, but I doubt you will get any noticeable venting there to really catch the smell.
Any other leaks under the hood that could make it on hot exhaust?

Thanks for the replay. I've checked under the car and find no obvious leaks on the ground or on the bottom of the car as far as I can view from ground level. I'm curious if any other Genesis first generation owners have experienced this after pushing the car pretty hard. I know that some on this site have tried their cars on tracks for 0-60 times and that must be pushing it pretty hard!
Thanks again.

I'm getting it as well. No clue why. Seems to happen when pushing it a little. Also getting some whining in certain gears. Are you getting a whine also?

I haven't noticed a whine. Just the smell.

Sorry in advance if this is a stupid question. I was going to check the condition of the transmission fluid to see if it smells burnt but I cannot find in the manual a way (such as a dipstick) to check this on the 2014 1st gen RSpec. Is there a way to check this besides some shop procedure? Thanks.

Sounds like you are smelling your catalytic converters in your exhaust getting hot. This normal, and I smell this on a daily basis:cool:

It is difficult to check and difficult to change it. The synthetic fluid is meant to last a very long time.

I wonder if synthetic transmission fluid even smells like conventional fluid (burnt or otherwise).

Thanks for the reply Mark888. In searching other non-Hyundai forums, it seems that this is not unusual - particularly if you do not push you car hard very often.
Unless I start reading a code that indicates a problem with the cat converter(s) I'm not going to be too concerned about this unless I start smelling this during normal driving.

The whine I referred to earlier is noise from the engine, not the transmission actually.

Are you sure it's trans fluid and not oil?

Yes, I'm sure it's not oil. The more I research this and the more the smell is identified from other forums I feel 90% sure that it is the catalytic converters.
