  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Buy now or wait for G80 rebranding?

Hi all... I am new to the Genesis world, and just yesterday test drove a Genesis for the very first time, a 2016 3.8. I fell in love with the car, everything about it, inside and out. However I am debating on whether I should pull the trigger now with some pretty attractive deals going on, or wait a few weeks (months?) until the '17 rebranded ones are out and likely not get as great a deal.

I've read conflicting reports about the differences in the two cars. Some say almost no difference, others say there are several. Also my thinking is that five years from now the Genesis brand might have a better resale value than one with the Hyundai name/emblem. Thoughts on that?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Lease it for three years. Then, pop out of your burrow in 2019 and see the lay of the land...

I don't think five years from now the difference will be that great at all. Not as great as the initial price difference between a discounted 2016 and a first on the lot 2017, anyway.

There is just no way I would wait. Your choice, though.

If it was me I'd buy a 2016. You can get some very nice pricing. And from all I have read the G80 will be basically the same car.

Check around dealerships in your area and see how many 2016's they still have. My guess is you can get an even better deal on a 2016 when the 2017's come out within the next month or so.

Then in a few months you can probably order a G80 emblem and wings from a local Hyundai parts department (since they will be HMA parts), and then you can convert the 2016 to a 2017 at that point.

It looks like there will be some service differences (such as concierge service) that will be for the new brand only in 2017, so consider how important that is. However, I would expect to pay for it built into the price.

Doesn't seem to be any difference except for the G80 badge and the free service. I got the G80 emblem and Genesis wing for less than $25. I paid close to $6000 off for a 2016 last month. Depends how much you want/need a 2017. Doesn't seem to be any differences otherwise.

Thanks. I wonder what the concierge services would entail. The Mercedes dealer near me is quite impressive (Free loaner during service and delivered to your home, 24 hour roadside service, full breakfast and lunch, complimentary airport drop-offs and pickups, unlimited car washes, etc). If it's something like that it might be worth it, but not $6,000 worth it. I guess I'll wait to see what these new '17s end up selling for and if there are any upgrades from the '16s, and go from there.

Concierge service is apparently like the one provided now for the Equus. They will pickup your car, service it, and return it when done. No meals or transportation to airport. However, a few Equus owners were not thrilled with how well it was executed in practice.

The 2017 G80 packages will be different than before, and supposedly some of the collusion avoidance stuff will be standard (but not sure), so if you wanted one without that stuff then maybe should look at a 2016. I would expect the 2017 to be more expensive than the 2016, plus maybe not discounted any time soon to the same degree as Hyundai Genesis models have been.

The headline is not accurate. The new base unit Genesis includes as standard equipment:

  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Blind spot detection / Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Lane keep assist / Lane departure warning
  • A few other items like automatic trunk release, etc
These items were previously only on the Tech Package. This makes the prices about the same (at least MSRP is the same).

If your are considering a current Tech Package car, you'll get the premium leather. 2017 G80s will reserve that for the Ultimate.

Since they moved from 3 packages (plus base) in 2016 to 2 packages (plus base) in 2017, obviously the packages don't match up, and there are other differences as well.

In my opinion, get a screaming deal on a leftover 2016 before they're all gone. Even though the 2017 G80 has more standard equipment, it still costs $2500 more in base price.

For me, I got a base AWD model because I didn't want or need the extra options. I'm sure blind spot warning, lane keep assist and auto braking are nice, but I don't want them and not worth extra $2500 to me. I can drive and pay attention, unlike some of the folks out there trying to find Pokemon or post a Snapchat of traffic.

The deals are too good to pass up right now, so do yourself a favor and grab a 2016. Slim pickens but you'll get a great deal. Good luck.

I can't see my self just buying the base car , is like driving just the box with no tech. What's the point? Looks? I rather have the safety features and all is tech that's what I enjoyed when driving since 100% time I'm inside the car

Buy yourself a leftover new 2015 Ultimate. Getting harder to find, but with over $12k off the sticker... Fly to wherever, enjoy a couple of days, and drive home in your new baby. I was planning a trip either to Baltimore or N Carolina until I discovered one locally and the dealer matched the price. I wanted HUD badly, as I had it before and have always missed it.

If your willing to buy a low mileage Genesis, and I mean just a few thousand miles, or a demo....the price is like $15k less than sticker. The price on these cars is amazing. There's 53 AWD Ultimates (2015) new on Cars.com right now nationwide.

I'd buy a leftover Hyundai Genesis and take the several thousand you saved and enjoy a vacation!

"Base car" should be taken with a grain of salt when referring to the Genesis. My previous Q50 was a base model also, but that was truly a bare bones car. In comparison, the Q50 did not have real leather, heated seats, navigation, 18" wheels, auto dimming mirror with homelink, welcome lights, automatic opening trunk, etc.

I would never buy a base Q50 again, but the Genesis comes so well equipped I didn't need the optional features. The base stereo system on the Genesis sounds better than the upgraded Bose on Infiniti, and on par with the Bang Olufson in my previous A5.

To match a Q50 with same options as a base Genesis, the MSRP would be close to $50k. Not worth the extra $8k to me. The Genesis is best value in the segment hands down.

Buy now and get the V8 Ultimate. You won't be disappointed, that is for sure.
