  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I live in Washington State and I'm trying to figure out how feasible it would be (or possible) to buy a new Canadian G70 in British Columbia (Vancouver area) and drive it into the U.S.

This would probably only be if the color and interior color combination I want isn't available in the U.S. I have read I would need to get a letter from the manufacturer stating the car meets U.S. safety standards to bring it through customs.

In one of the Genesis "truck delivery" videos the Genesis representative mentioned they delivered a car to someone in Florida so that makes me think it's possible. Thoughts? Am I crazy to be thinking about this?

You would also have to get permission from Genesis Motors America to provide 5/60K warranty service, valet service, and free maintenance for 3/36K, unless you plan on taking it back to Canada to get serviced.

Also, you would completely forgo the 10/100K powertrain warranty which is only available in the USA (to original owners).

I would suggest that you just take a cold shower, and SNAP OUT OF IT.

OK, thanks for the reality check! I hadn’t considered the warranty implications.

I have a 2013 Canadian Genesis that I have been driving in California for a few years. Genesis US and Canada are 2 separate and distinct entities with no agreements or commonalities.
You do/will have warranty in the US on a Canadian car but you will be required to pay the US dealer and file a claim with Hyundai Canada for reimbursement.
Importing is a whole different animal; you do have to get a certificate of compliance from Hyundai Canada that it meets US standards and you will also have to pay duty on the car as it's made in Korea not one of the NAFTA countries, currently that duty is only 2.5%.
The other issue is my car is in KM not miles and all of the calcs like distance to empty, fuel economy, MPG (KM per 100ML) are all metric with no way of switching them to US miles and gallons.
I also have a heated steering wheel, undefeatable DRLs and no TPMS as these were the laws of Canada when it was manufactured.
My personal thoughts buy the US car and be done with it.

Good to know. Thank you.

Not that I was considering this, but I've been curious.

Keep in mind that even though Hyundai Motor America is the parent company of Genesis Motors America, the warranty on a G70 may be handled by Genesis Motors America, and they don't seem to have their act together yet, and may not want to mess with such an arrangement.

As an aside: Similar thoughts went through my brain when I was stalking a new VW Golf. I wanted a loaded (SEL) 1.8T gasoline w/ manual transmission--available that way in Canada, but loaded gasoline MKVII Golfs were not sold w/ manual transmission in the States.
[You probably say, "You shoulda just gone GTI!", but I preferred the Silk Blue offered on the Golf (not the GTI), as well as the two-tone interior available on the Golf, and its SEL "Durban" wheels too.]
