  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have located the GV80 that I am interested at dealerships that are ~1000-1500 miles from me. Those who bought out of state, how did you manage to get your vehicle: did you drive it home or have it shipped? How much does it typically cost to ship?

Most dealers that I am talking to are offering GV80 for MSRP, except a few that asked for $3-10K more.

There is this one dealership, who is asking for $399 dealer prep fee (to get the vehicle cleaned up and all), $300 for tinting, $300 for glass etching (VIN), ~300 for door protector strip, etc. Not sure any of these are wroth it.

i drove mine from out of state. was about a 10hr drive for me. Shipping can range from $500-2k+ depending on location, distance, enclosed trailer, etc.

I bought from out of state, but luckily. it was only 75 miles away. Had a friend take me there.
IMHO, you'll save $ and time, let alone get a proper delivery, by flying to the dealership & driving home. Also, IMHO, scratch ALL of those stealerships that want to gouge you with extras and $ over MSRP. There ARE good dealerships that, only by supply, will sell to you for MSRP only! My dealership did!

I live in Arizona and bought mine in Ohio. The dealer arranged the shipping with a trucker he had used many times before. As I recall shipping cost was about $1500 and I had it in 5 days. It might be difficult to get out of the $399 dealer prep fee but I would balk at those other B.S. add-ons.

In the past I have flown in and picked up vehicles and driven them home. I would have done that with the GV but it was January and I didn't want to deal with possible lousy weather. What is the distance between your home and the dealer? Weather should be great for a while.

I drove 5 hours in my trade-in there (they reviewed my pictures and carfax remotely and agreed to a price) and 5 hours in the GV80 back. If I didn't have a trade-in, I would've considered flying out there.

Those dealership add-ons sound like de-facto dealer mark-ups w/ little to no additional value. I'd pass.

About 1200 to 1400. miles depending on which dealer I go with. It would be a 20+ hour drive if I don't take a break, which I can't. So, a 2-day drive with a stop for a night.

The one that asks $3K over has absolutely no add ons and told me other dealerships that offer MSRP add things on up to $7-10K and that they don't do any of that. They are rat3ed 4.9/5 on google. The guy sounds honest and upfront.

The one that asks MSRP+$500 has ~$2500 add ons and God knows what else they may try to sneak in before we agree on the out the door price.

There is a thread here "Price paid out the door" that has a lot of information about dealers good and bad regarding dealer mark up over MSRP. Most recently I'm hearing the only package that is getting over sticker is the Prestige and not everywhere at that Just keep looking and you can find a fair deal.
I paid MSRP plus a $300 doc fee for my Prestige in January. At my request they added a premium tire and wheel package for the 22" ers which was about $600 for 60 months protection. Good luck.

I just bought my GV80 last week. Dealership is 1100 miles away. I went with a covered truck so it cost a little more, was $1800 ($1500 for open). My sales guy has a truck broker he works with and they set up transport that way.

I bought from 950 miles away. Paid $1,200 for a covered truck delivery. Figured by time I paid for plane ticket and a couple nights hotel, gas, etc. was worth it.

I bought my G70 in the Oklahoma City area and I went to pick it up from the Austin area (roughly 400 miles door-to-door). Shipping was an option but honestly I'd rather it be me that put on the miles. I did have to register the vehicle myself in Texas though, and this ended up being a huge problem because the dealer I bought from was a combined Hyundai and Genesis dealer, but the Title document that the manufacturer supplies the dealer said Genesis. The Bill-of-Sale said Hyundai, which did not in any way please my local tax authority.

The dealership then ghosted me until I hopped in my car and showed up at their doorstep (yep, I drove the 400 miles) and fussed like a 1950s housewife at the GM. I eventually got it all settled, but I wouldn't buy from this particular dealer again (Edmond Genesis/Hyundai of Edmond Oklahoma). I went through all of this because I wanted AWD and they were not readily available in Texas.

Thank you all for sharing your experiences and advice.

UPDATE: I was able to negotiate MSRP + $399 (dealer Prep fee for delivery) + $290 (Window tint) + $290 (VIN etching on the windows). I realize the added accessories are not something that I want, with prep fee being a rip off, but with the current demand, I guess I am going to have to swallow it. It will probably cost me ~1000 for shipment (Montway).

The sales guy, whose name I will reveal after my purchase, is a nice guy, very helpful. He asked me to fill out paperwork saying $5000 deposit. I asked him why I need to put the deposit since I'm planning on paying the whole amount using a vehicle loan I have an approval for. He said they need $5000 deposit to hold the vehicle until I sign the paperwork, which they will be sending via FEDEX. Is this normal?

Yes. Did same thing except only $2k

At this point in the buying yes, a down payment is normal and can range in amount. I'm guessing a lot of them got burned with people saying they wanted the car then when they got there couldn't get approved for the loan or didn't like the amount of the loan payments and backed out. Mine even had me do all the loan paperwork 3 days before picking up the car after I'd given them $3500 to hold the car once it was enroute via truck to them. So yes, at this point in your purchase a deposit and/or applying for your loan is normal.

It is a little nerve-racking buying something this expensive sight unseen given the stigma around car sales men:cautious:

I bought mine so sight unseen that I hadn't even driven one until I'd already paid for mine. Mine was the first one that had been ordered and delivered in the southeastern US back in mid December last year. There were none to look at and none to test drive. And I don't regret the decision at all. But all that being said I watched every video online that I could get my hands on before making the decision to buy it. (Asian Petrolhead on Youtube is great as are a few others) But from the time I ordered it in late May to when I received it in December my salesman and I had formed a great friendship that continues to this day. We talked every two weeks about what we'd learned about the car and where it was in the build. So I wasn't worried about my salesman, I knew he would do all he could to take care of me as much as he could.

I am huge fan of avoiding my local California dealerships trying to charge thousands above MSRP and buying from out of state dealers who charge no more than MSRP. I bought my Carnival sight unseen from a dealer 1000 miles away because local dealers were asking at minimum 5K above MSRP.

Curiuos to know how my local dealer would feel when I take the vehicle that I bought elsewhere for complementary maintenance/service valet? Would they provide any less of a service?

I'm pretty sure they are reimbursed by Genesis for those services so it shouldn't matter where you bought it.

All of this makes me think that a nice part time job for this non smoker 75yo retiree would be driving all of your GV80s from dealerships scattered around the country to your front door.
Then again, time, gas, flights to dealership & your home to my home would totally nullify any savings from you having it shipped.
Just sitting here daydreaming. :)

I know a man who did this in his retirement. He was hired by the dealership group, several stores, to drive cars to customers or exchange new cars with other dealers. He worked on demand, occasionally an overnight involved. After a year or two he decided it was not the job for him.
