If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi guys,

I really appreciate your thoughts and input. It's a big purchase for me, so I'm trying to make the right decision.

2015 Hyundai Genesis Ultimate 3.8 RWD. 33k miles. All original warranties expired. Everything works on the car now, all the techy stuff. New tires, new fluids, I even had the Hyundai dealer check it out and they said it looks really clean.

Carvana offered me a 4 year, 90k mileage extended warranty through Silverrock for $2100. Covers 99% of things that the manufacturer warranty would cover. I'm not so worried about powertrain, but I am worried about all the tech stuff that the Ultimate package comes with. In 2015, Hyundai/Genesis did not have the track record of these items. So my question is, the owners of similar car/year, have you had any issues with your 2015/2016 Genesis 3.8 RWD? Also, would you recommend me getting the extended warranty.

Thank you for your time. I just found this forum and it looks very helpful, just amazing... Drive safe!

I never buy warranties but this is a case where it makes sense. Check the coverage and be sure all the electronics are covered. That is where the big bills hide. Head units list in the $3000 range.

For the price it would be good peace of mind and potentially can save a bundle.

To be honest, you may be able to save your money by not buying the extended warranty if you are a DYI person since most of the issues with the 2015+ models seems to be mostly cosmetic issues. However, you can never be too safe and just buy the warranty for an extra piece of mind. Any used car model(or even new car models) can have some problem lurking that can hit you when you are not ready.

I have owned my 2015 5.0 ultimate with 76k miles since 2018 and it has been pretty reliable except for mostly cosmetic issues(peeling shift knob, wiper stalk, pillar trim) that I repaired on my own for less than a couple hundred bucks. I probably could have just save the money I spent on my extended warranty.

I would only recommend getting a warranty from Hyundai if you can do that, My experience with the Ford warranty has been bad. But yes, all those little electronica modules and the like are very expensive.

As stated above this car (in my experience - I have 88k miles on mine) doesn't seem to have any catastrophic "pain points". I elected to keep a savings account for maintenance/repair as opposed to paying monthly on a warranty. I seem to have come out ahead so far over 2 1/2 years of ownership - the only significant failures that I've had was the alternator/battery which was around $550-600 total. The warranty cost would have been much more than that.

As long as it's a full coverage warranty (not including glass/seals/wearables) I'd highly recommend it.

I paid $3880 for an extended warranty with full coverage to 100k miles and it just paid out ~$13k in repairs at 89,000 miles. Engine had something go kaput, the kaput extended to blowing the cats clean out of the pipes, had a BSD module failure, mirror failure, rear speaker failure... warranty paid for itself and more.

What was the engine failure?

Driver's side jumped timing at near redline. It looks like the car started dumping fuel down both banks after that and lit off an explosion in the exhaust collectors. It's been in the shop for 6 weeks now. Each exhaust manifold is a whopping $1000 before labor.

WOW. I hope that is not an common issue with these engines. I was under the expression that the 2015+ 5.0 engines has improved timing chains than the 2012-2014 5.0 models, which were pretty strong already.

It's not confirmed yet, but suspected to be an issue with the cam phase adjuster.
