If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Sorry about not searching through the forum meticulously, but I need a car quick and this is at the top of my list.

Can you provide any advice or problems to consider when looking to purchase a 2012 to 2014 5.0?

The car seems solid and has great reviews. There is one story about oil consumption in the 2012. Any advice on what to avoid or problems I need to be aware of would be appreciated.

Please feel free to blast me for being lazy, but I can't start searching this forum until late tonight because of work. :bullheaded:

There arent many R-spec out there. per my price range, i settled for a 4.6L, there are ECU re-flash to up performance close to 5.0L. Just keep that in mind. I'm one month owner and have no regrets on picking the 4.6L

If you are thinking about buying one of these cars, take the VIN to your local dealer and ask a service writer pull the service history. Make sure it's eligible for a Hyundai Platinum Protection Plan extended warranty, and get a quote (will be a few thousand $ depending on your choice of years/miles).

Do not own one of these cars outside of warranty. All of the parts likely to fail are made in Korea and all of them are expensive to replace. And unless you're really lucky and have a local KDM expert mechanic nearby who has all the diagnostic tools and works cheap, the only people who can work on these cars are dealers.

I paid ~$3k for my extended warranty this past summer, and it just covered a $2500 HECU replacement at 100%.

Not trying to scare you. I loved my '09 and love my '12 (bought used for a great price 2 years ago) and plan to keep it at least until 2023 or 120k miles, which is when my HPP warranty expires.

This is one of those cars where I'd highly recommend making sure you have a warranty no matter the cost. Either you get a car that has no problems or you get one that is nothing but from everything I've seen over the years. As the owner of a latter car, my warranty has covered in the area of $20k in repairs since I've owned the car. My last visit alone would have been near $4k (HECU, charcoal canister, fill-neck purge valve) and one of my headlights is currently cracking internally and is not covered.

I have a 2013 rspec with 93000 miles. Runs GREAT and looks great also. Zero issues since I got it with about 50k miles. I take care of my car (not obsessive) and it honestly shows very little wear.

I would look for a 2013 or a 14. No need to risk issues by saving some money on a 2012. Due to the oil issues and the 2013 has a much better navigation system. The 2014 has some other colors for the rspec.

Hey there! First off they are wonderful cars! I have a 2012 5.0 R-Spec that I purchased with 55K miles. It currently had 78K and running strong. Yes if you get a 2012 you will run into the possibility of Oil Consumption issues. I didnt know this before buying the car and should have researched more on the issue but I check the oil every 700-800 miles and heres what I have noticed: the first 1-2000 miles of oil life, no consumption then 2000-4000 miles I usually have to put about a quart and a half during that time. That's it. I've tried different vicosities, different brands of oil, synthetic vs non. And at this point I just have the oil changed with conventional oil every 3000-4000 miles with zero issues. Also replacing the PCV valve does help to curb the consumption slightly. No reason to put in synthetic if you are going to have to add a quart or two within that time frame. besides this, the only other issue I have had is the rear seat warmers not working and the dreaded Smart Cruise Control being a piece of shit. Personally I dont care about either of these issues, but that's me. It a quick, fun handling and beautiful rare care that I get questions on all of the time. So if you want to own 429 HP with beautiful looks, amazing stereo and the luxury necessities then I'd say go out and buy it. If you can get a 2013 even better.

I believe 5.0s 2012 made before Nov 2011 were the problem ones. Dealers were to remedy with new engines if pressed. I have an early 2013 and go 7k before syn oil changes and have no appreciable dip stick difference. I have almost 50 k on it and have not been back to the dealer except for oil changes( very messy to do). I provide my own oil and they chg $25 w/filter but also check all components on their check list. I know of a few that have over 100k and have had no real work done except normal brake pads, filters, etc. My front pads are still 20 % left so looks like 60k before changing them. I haven't had a car with such reliability. I do dog it hard and have 2nd cat deletes, air box mag delete, run super premium(93) fuel and run BMWS/ Merc (all non AMG/M5s), 370Zs, WRXs, any non mod mustang thru 2016 and have had no losses. The harder u run it the ECU advances(if u use premium) to max internal design and shift pattern slightly changes. So far a great underestimated car.
