  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Took me 30 minutes to remove the air box and install a K&N RF-1040 cone filter as explained by REY in an older thread and the results are fantastic.
Under hard acceleration I can hear a very mean engine. Car feels faster than before but this is subjective. I have pictures available, pm me if interested, I couldn't embed them to this thread because of the size (1.7M)
My next step is to get a nice "drone-free" cat-back, any suggestions?

Enjoy :D

I always get a kick out of people who install K&N filters and their butt dynos tell them the car is faster. Of course, there will be more noise coming from the engine that might assist in the illusion.

A month from now, take the K&N off and wipe the inside of the intake with a white Kleenex. Remember that what the Kleenex picks up is only a small part of what has gone through your engine.

I heard seat of pants performance increase is actually better with this. :D [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfFCPTeUJiU&feature=player_embedded"]XLR8 Test Drive - YouTube[/ame]

Didn't know K&N filters are so bad at filtering the air...

Read my post...the word "subjective" is mentioned

While some people get along with them, most knowledgeable people avoid them like the plague. Here's a link to a test done by an independent gear head that had access to the proper test equipment for air filter testing.

http://www.scribd.com/doc/23641356/ISO-5011-Duramax-Air-Filter

One of the more damning statements from the report above is:

After only 24 minutes the K&N had
accumulated 221gms of dirt but passed 7.0gms. Compared to the AC, the K&N “plugged up” nearly
3 times faster, passed 18 times more dirt and captured 37% less dirt.

I will do the Kleenex test in a few days and let you know. It shouldn't take more than couple of days to see the dirt if the filter has the flaws mentioned in that test

Personally, AEM dryFlow or Vibrant DryFlow are the way to go. No oil to mess with MAF and very good filtering ability.

As to a drone free exhaust...that would be ANY exhaust you choose. Reason being that you have an 8 speed transmission. That means at highway speeds you will be at like 1500RPM. Cant really drone there.

Unlike my car that is at 2500RPM at 70MPH...:(

Nice Forzza!

Great minds must think alike. I too followed Rey's procedure last weekend. I am a big fan of the results. I am getting about a 1-2 MPG efficiency increase as well.

In addition to the air box, I also removed one of the secondary filter boxes (off the main air channel to the right). I am contemplating removing the OTHER secondary air box to the left and behind the main air channel. I just noticed this other secondary air box the other day.

427435 - I will be sure to post pictures of my engine when it has melted into a slag of molten metal on the side of the road due to the K&N. ;-)

Thanks again to Rey for trailblazing this mod for us.

Cheers,
Newman

What a joke. A 1-2 mpg improvement----------yeah, right. It is obvious that your engine knowledge is very limited. Fuel delivery is controlled by the computer and the MAF sensor. At a given speed, the air flow into the engine will be the same regardless of what air filter (or none at all) is present. The computer will inject the same amount of fuel for whatever air flow is present so your claim is just ridiculous.

The K&N won't melt your engine down, but dust does not do good things for the rings. You will also probably get your warranty denied for any internal engine problems if you show up with a K&N style filter on the car.

By the way, how many years have you been a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE)? I'm at 47 and counting.

Whether you are correct or not is irrelevant. Your condescension and attitude guarantees that I won't take you seriously.

Due me a favor... take an oil sample now -- send it to Blackstone.

Take an oil sample every oil change afterwords and CYA -- watch your motor life go down the tubes.

Bottom line unless you loosen the restriction on the OEM setup (intake manifold, TB, runners, cams) the OEM paper filter will do just fine until you start building real power.

Save your $$$ for real MODs.

My buddy runs a CAI (K&N cone filter) for about 5 years now and his engine does not show any signs of wear and tear...I am missing something here???

Again. Oil analysis is everything. I send my oil off to Blackstone after every change. Run your high marketed dollar K&N vs mine and over the life of the motor and see which motor takes the beating.

Your $ per hp ratio is not well spent here... esp when you start talking about worn rings, etc
