  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

My roommate recently acquired a Hyundai Genesis 2014, 3.6 motor, 42k miles. He wants to drive this car to the ground and asked me if I could maintain it like it’s one of mine. I mostly work on bmws. Other than maintenance/wear items what should I look out for or are these cars not worthwhile to keep if you plan on surpassing 200k miles.

Also anyone surpassed 200k or 300k miles should comment I’m curious how ownership is. Thank you!

From browsing the forums a bit a lot of people seem to be having fuel and transmission issues. What’s up with that?

I heard on the genesis coupe they had manual zf trans, kinda unfortunate that the 8 speed isn’t a zf.

:welcome:

The 2014 3.8 is perhaps the best of the 1st generation Genesis sedan cars in terms of reliability, and would be my preferred purchase if I were to re-up again.

The Hyundai-made 8 speed transmission was brand new in 2012, and yes they can start having valve-body issues (rough-shifting) around 100k or so, but I suspect that has a lot to do with long-term driving style/conditions and can be DIY'd as documented here. Haven't heard too many trans issues with the 2014, so I presume much of that 1st year stuff was sorted out as is often the case with 2nd/3rd model year major components.

EDIT: Fuel system issues are rare. What you're seeing on the forum is the onset of 10+year-old-car long term wear out. Random stuff starts breaking on 10 year old cars. For me recently it was the purge valve (98k miles), and what I would consider to be expected long term maintenance/wear-out stuff that I can easily DIY (OEM $35 part).

If your roomate's new ride is already a good nine-year-old low-mileage car, it will likely continue to be a good car to 200k if treated well.

Currently at almost 196K miles and still going strong. Purchased brand new in June 2014.

My 2012 Genesis 3.8 still is in great shape. They don't make them like they used to. Jep604 - do you get your vehicle serviced at a Hyundai dealership? I'm due for some random maintenance and now that my 100K/10 year warranty is up, I'm wondering if an independent repair shop will be cheaper?

Don't want to make a blanket statement but most are cheaper. Careful though, talk to neighbors. Some are as sleazy as the dealers.

Funny you should ask, had a conversation minutes ago. My daughter-in-law took her Mustang to a local shop for oil change and asked about some dripping she noticed. The drip was the bottom radiator hose. He also recommended she get another $1100 worth of work done. None has been needed yet, a year later.

I had all of the maintenance performed at the dealership where I bought it up to 100K miles. The I used mostly a local shop for oil/filter changes and tire replacement with alignments. I have to agree with EdP, talk to some locals about any shops you are considering.

I have 220K on my 2009 and EVERTHING STILL WORKS, Rides good and can run linke a scalded dog!

Currently at 208K and only issue is the TPMS light on the dash. I will have that addressed when I can schedule it in for the corrosion recall. The car is sitting at the hangar right now as we are traveling out west for 2 weeks which is the longest the car has ever been without driving.

I have 189,000 miles on my 2009 Genesis. The only past problem at 156,000 miles I've had, has been brakes and really bad dealer service. After paying $700.00 and driving 5 miles with the brake light still on, the brake pedal went to the floor. Drove it back in low gear and complained. Two days later they said that repairs would now cost $2670.00 and they could not guarantee that would be the only cost. They refunded my $700.00 and I took the car home slowly and found the master brake cylinder was bad. They also put a dent in my door and denied they did it. Now at 189,000 miles I have a steering wheel left to right shake when I apply the brakes at around 65 5miles per hour. All other braking speeds seem normal. In checking, for worn ball joints etc., I found the rear ABS wire on the drivers side was not connected. All dash lights are off now and the brakes seem normal except for the violent left to right shake when braking at around 65 miles per hour. I replaced front hubs, rotors and pads. This didn't help; but I seem to be getting closer to the problem, but haven't resolved it yet. After the recall on DOT 3 brake fluid, I took the car in to update the fluid, and during my search and replacing the master cylinder I drained the so called dealer updated dot 4 fluid and found sludge that floated on top of the new drained dot 4 fluid. When I complained again, they wanted to keep the 3 bottles of fluid for an investigation. Like that was ever going to happen! Any idea on the wobble would help. Thanks

Holy crap, that is terrible. My brakes are original and the shop keeps reminding me the pads are getting close when I have the tires rotated every third 3-4K mile service. On a prior thread I inquired on people’s thoughts on brakes from the OEM and Power Stop.

8 days ago, I received an extended warranty notification for 2009 - 2012 Genesis and 2011 - 2012 Equus cars. They extended the warranty period to 15 years with unlimited miles for replacement of the (HECU). This could be my braking problem with my violent left to right steering wheel shake. I'm thinking maybe the ABS or HECU is applying the brakes alternate left to right and that's causing the shake. I'll use a new dealer this time, even with a 60 to 70 mile drive. I'm keeping the car as I love it. Having retired young, but then taking a consultant position at Delphi, I would never ever buy another car built by the UAW run American companies, and believe me they do run them. Managers have no say in what the union wants or do in the plant. The same quality manual covered all 3 of the big car companies, but the UAW did what they wanted and quality didn't matter. Many times 8 to 10 people were sent to the assembly plants to separate junk brakes missing component's from good parts going into new cars. After 9 years I'd had enough and left Delphi. The manufacturing plant soon was closed and torn down. The separate component spare parts division was sold to the Chinese. The UAW workers all lost their jobs due to their uncaring ways. While I drive the Genesis and the wife drives a Kia, we still have a oil leaking Ford van that never stops reminding me to never buy another UAW assembled car. What American car company have extended their warranty to 15 years?

Agreed…that’s why I have been driving Hyundai products since 2006. My wife drives an 01 Durango that she will never part with that has 168K miles. I just throw some money at it every few years for new brakes, A/C system replacement, exhaust and tires along with scheduled maintenance as needed. We are out in Reno Tahoe now with a rental car and am missing my Genesis. Hyundai extended my airbag warranty to 15 years a few years ago due to parts issues.

2009 Genesis 3.8L still running strong after 146K miles for this original Owner. I’ve performed all maintenance myself as the internet and a $50 Service Manual have educated me. My car has been in a Dealership’s shop twice and one of those visits was covered under warranty (bad throttle sensor). The other issue was the air conditioner compressor was replaced but this issue very likely caused by myself.
This car costs me $32k and has unquestionable been the best car I’ll EVER own!
