  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Can you upgrade the built-in 0.5amp USB port to charge a phone faster?

Hey,

I have a 2015 Genesis ultimate and an Google Pixel. I use Android Auto (like carplay) a lot but the phone battery goes down very quickly while using it. From what I can tell, it's using an old USB that only charges at 0.5 amps which is 1/4th of what it should be IMO.

Has anyone found a working solution for this such as upgrading the USB port or is my only hope to get a phone that charges wirelessly and get a wireless charging puck for the car?

I have no idea why they went with such a low USB output when the battery demand is harder on the phone. You'll end up discharging the phone in that case. I'm sure you could rewire it with some schematic knowledge but I don't think it'd be worth the electrical surgery involved.

i just checked and output is even less at .4 amp. even then, i use galaxy s9+ and get a net gain even while navigating and streaming music on aa. u must have some app that is draining the battery. use battery monitoring app and check.

I would assume that upgrading the USB is impossible to do without removing the USB module since the USB circuitry is part of the head unit itself. Therefore , it is possible if you know your way around a soldiering iron and circuity.
You will need something like this that can be swapped in place of the .5 amp USB charging circuit.

Try one of these..

15" Inch USB 2.0 High Speed Type A Female to Dual Male Extension Y Cable: Amazon.ca: Gateway

Plug the thicker end into the USB port and the thinner one into the cigarette lighter (assuming you have a charger plugged into it). The thinner one should be power only while the thicker end has power and data. It should let you use the data wires for android auto and charge from the cigarette lighter at the same time.
Wouldn't it be easier just to plug in a USB Charger adapter into the power (lighter) socket? Something like the attachment.

This cable should only draw power from one of the male usbs. Both draw power! if you are looking for something to draw power from one port and send information with another you are in the wrong place. computer and android auto do not recognize device at all this adapter is useless.

Then you wouldn't get to use Android Auto, you'd just be charging the phone.

The reviewer doesn't know what he bought. The cable is working as it should. It's supposed to draw from both inputs, they were designed for ports that don't output enough power so it has to draw power from 2 USB ports. I use one of these for my Wii U, the ports don't put out enough to power a portable hard drive. With the Y cable, it draws from 2 ports which is enough to power the drive.

About 7 months ago it was offered on myHyundai as a software update to your map software for free. It was taken down several months later and is now only offered in the complete map software update for a nominal fee (new maps/software). I dont believe the Ultimate software was updatable though

Yeah that is what I thought when reading. I have a 2015 5.0 and it definitely has android auto... I use it every day.
I'm on 12.5. Will upgrade to version 13.0 soon.

Maybe all 2015 5.0's aren't Ultimate packages? I thought they all were.

*Edit*:

I'm wrong, I have a 5.0 but not the ultimate package which makes sense since I don't have heads up display. I read an article that said all 5.0's only have one option, the ultimate package. Clearly read that wrong lmao. I have separate climate control for driver and passenger.

Anyways... I guess there isn't a good way to charge my phone while using AA

this guy put in a powered usb hub and gets better charge rate. comments from some hyundai owners said it doesn't work....oh well

Like I posted a while back, you need a USB Y cable so you can draw power from the USB port and one of the cigarette lighter outlets. Not the prettiest solution but it should work.

Here's one that's USB C. You'll still need a USB adapter for the cigarette lighter.
