Canadian Extended Warranty Questions

Hey guys,

My 5 year warranty is about to expire and although most things on the car seem easy to fix, I'd like to extend it in case something expensive ever breaks (transmission, engine, navigation, ABS module, cruise control, etc.)

I keep reading that in the US you can get 5-10 more years for $1000 and what not, but in Canada things are very different. When I bought my car in 2015 I was offered 2 more years for over $3k which seemed silly.

It's at 80k KM / 50k miles now and my girlfriend and I add maybe 10k km yearly. Since it's not advertised online, I have to call each dealership during their opening hours (my working hours) and then compare prices/features which could take a while. What should I be expecting in terms of pricing for an "everything covered/low deductible" extended warranty? What should I consider a "good" value?

The extended warranty in the US for the 1G genesis had a dealer cost of about $1050, so it could be purchased at about $1200 on up. Most people who shopped around a lot paid about $1300 - $1500, but it was not unusual for a dealer to quote $3000 just to see if you would bite. But not sure if you are quoting USD or Canadian dollars.

In the US, getting the extended warranty a few years after purchase costs a more than if purchased when new (or nearly new). Hopefully, someone in Canada who has purchased an extended warranty there can give you more info.

I the car's age and mileage I doubt you can get an extended warranty from anything other than a 3rd party.
Buying this kind of coverage is like life insurance, cheap when you're 25 and expensive when you're 75.
If you have relative few issues with the car I'd pass as I'm sure you will find the coverage of actual breakdowns limited or the cost prohibitive.

Our roads are also garbage so suspensions/struts/control arms need to be changed quite often and we use salt 6 months a year so cars rust within a couple of years.

I live in Nova Scotia and have never replaced a strut, suspension, control arm on any vehicle, where do you live where the roads are so terrible and you need to replace all these things quite often?

There is literally not a 2 second interval on my way to work or home where my car isn't going over potholes, cracks and bumps. Our city's roads are much worse than those in third world countries I've been to, just check out google street view

Within 5 years any car with exposed metal generally is completely rusted here, especially exhaust pipes, undersides, wheel wells, etc. so that's also a major issue, although the plastic fenders on the Genesis and plastic covers under the car help.


I've replaced control arms and struts on the Maxima, had rust issues like everyone else here, and I've had to adjust my alignment on the Genesis twice already, although nothing broke yet.

I don't know about Canada, but damage that results from road hazards is usually not considered to be covered in a US warranty. Sometimes it may not be clear what caused the damage, but if they are pretty sure it was caused by road hazards they will not cover it (but would be covered by auto insurance, subject to any deductibles per incident).

Good to know, I'll have to ask about that.

I was offered the extended Hyundai plan when I bought my Genesis (used). I believe it was offered for under C$1000. I was going to get it, as it was presented as bumper to bumper, but when I picked up the car the salesman 'corrected' the first guy and it didn't seem like a great deal (a lot of the electronics wouldn't be covered). At any rate, it can be negotiated as you say with any dealer up until the initial 5yr warranty runs out. I have another year to go, so I will see how things go, monitor this forum and take a decision then. Let us know if you get it!

To give you guys an idea, Ensureall (third party) offered 5 years/200k km for $2000. Hyundai dealer offered HPP for 5 years/100k km for $5050.
