  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Canadian stranded in Florida with transmission issue

Is this an isolated incident or do we have any other members who have had this problem with transfer case or transmission?

Gosh, I never even though about asking if yours was AWD.

All Canadian Hyundai Genesis & G80,G70 & G90 are standard with AWD since introduction in 2014.
We get the odd snowflake up here ;).

UPDATE: The car repairs are done - READY FOR PICKUP

Unbelievable. Last I heard from Nick the service advisor on Saturday at noon, the transfer case wouldn't be in for a week. Speaking with Lou the master technician tonight, the transfer case in fact arrived Friday afternoon. He made a special trip in to the shop Saturday to work on installing it since Nick said it was a rush (even though he should have realized we had already gone back to Canada). Communication issues.

When I spoke to Lou tonight, he said the transfer case along with the 4x4 computer was replaced and the tranny was flushed. The car now drives like new according to him.

I mentioned my concern that the tranny may have sustained damage which would shorten its serviceable life. Lou said he understands my concern, but does not feel that the tranny was compromised and should still have normal service life. He said upon closer inspection of its fluid, it was dark and had a "slight odour". That's a change from what he originally said "it was dark and smelled burnt indicating a failure within the transmission." He does seem like a straight shooter though, so I'm inclined to trust that the tranny will be alright.

Still, I'm going to email Genesis Motors Canada and see if I get any response regarding my concern.

I do appreciate the care and attention taken by Lou and Hyundai's warranty team in taking the time to accurately diagnose the root cause of the problem. By the looks of it, if the tranny was replaced the problem would still exist only prolonging the repair.

When we pick up the car, I'll do another update (hopefully NOT from the side of the road). :)

Sounds like it will all work out. Thanks for the update.

UPDATE: Picked up the car this afternoon and all it runs better than ever!

No issues driving the rental car from Canada to Florida. Left yesterday morning and arrived this afternoon.

Went to the dealership (O'Brien Hyundai) and the car was ready and waiting at the side of the waiting area. It was washed outside and cleaned inside with no visible damage of any kind. The rental car was returned without any issue.

The car seems to have more "snap" than ever before. Best described as being a lighter car than previously it just seems to accelerate better with less throttle than I recall, and that's at any speed. There was some transmission fluid that apparently spilled onto the exhaust system which is burning off, but I'm sure that will ease off in a few more runs. No drips under the car though.

I wonder if the transfer case was ever working properly from day one. It may have taken this long to get bad enough to show obvious symptoms. I haven't seen any indications on the net that these transfer cases on the htrac system are problematic and there is no indication that the 4x4 computers are an issue either. In my case, I'm not sure if the transfer case began to fail on its own or if the 4x4 computer was messing up and giving the transfer case bad input information which caused the transfer case to fail.

In any case, I'm happy to have my Genesis back! Heading back home in a couple of days and will only update this post IF there's another problem with the drive train on the way home.

Thanks for all the support and well wishes!!

Sounds like a happy ending. Safe travels on your trip back home.
