  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

There are new paint chip/scratch repair kits that are (apparently) far superior to old paint touch up kits (the paint can act as a filler, and once dry you use a solvent to easily wipe off the excess) e.g. Canadian Touch Up Kits and Dr. ColorChip Automotive Paint Chip Repair Kit

However, I have contacted both and despite advertising that they have G70 Havana Red (colour code Z5E), one company refunded my money, the second said the mix was complex and refused the order.

Does anyone know of any scratch/chip repair kits that reliably match Genesis colours?

I think your best bet is through a Genesis dealership. They have paint touch up pens, like this...

19798
19799

...such may be our only option as of right now. I haven't used mine yet.

Thanks for all the replies. @Toddasaurus - I just received my pen (which I had ordered before) but wasn't optimistic as these pens have limited use compared to what these new chip fix kits can do. And, to my frustration did NOT include the additional stylus and whatever that block is. My dealer will be hearing from me on that.

As for the suggestions from @danygenesis and @TurtleBoy - are these standard scratch chip fix kits, which require priming, possible filling, sanding and clearcoat sealing? I think these systems are basically miniature version of proper professional touch-up kits. If so, the effectiveness and results is based on your skills, time and patience.

I believe these "new" kits are different - it appears the paint isn't standard touch-up paint, as it also acts as a filler, and the finishing liquid acts as a leveler for a flush finish. You need to do repeated coats for very deep gouges. There are a few videos from purported independent enthusiasts and detailers singing its praises - for example:

If these products really are what they say they are, imagine the cost savings.

The one I linked to is a DIY touchup kit, not anything for professionals.

@TurtleBoy - thanks! This looks like a very similar system - the kit just seems more complete and therefore more complex (e.g. the carnuba wax). I will not that in the demo the gouge was still visible, a problem the previous products solved with multiple coats. I will ask them if they can reliably mix the Z5E colour - as I mentioned previously, two previous solution providers either refunded my money or refused the order on inquiry.

@TurtleBoy - the reply from Color 'n Drive:
Much to regret I will agree with others. Three some blends are always problematic. In fact we can achieve perfect match but we need your car in to our datacolor center and perform intense spectrophotometer work. Practically impossible to match it from distance.

This Havana Red business is really starting to become a problem - any options that can't be fixed with a pen are limited to expensive bodyshop repairs. I don't know who else can reliably mix this colour, but does this mean only dealership-available paints can be used?

Genesis has stopped producing cars with it also, must be something weird in the formula that makes it hard to be consistent.

I have a friend of mine owner of a body shop, he has told me that they never use dealers factory paint when they repair and paint some parts like fenders or bumpers. He says that the car paint is constantly reacting to the elements and as it ages it changes a lot compared with the factory paint. They usually take the gas cap out and send it to paint companies that specialize in paint replication, they do the blend and send the EXACT match of the paint the car has in this moment.
Now, talking about HR, there's something going on there because as @TurtleBoy says the factory stopped the production not so long ago. I hope is nothing important because I own a HR G70. LOL

Is this an issue for all colors of the Genesis? I planned to order some Dr. Color chip for my Casablanca white but just haven't gotten around to it yet. I've used it in the past and its top notch.

Well, at least that's one objective endorsement for a product I can't buy  - two of the suppliers specifically cited the fact that three paints had to be mixed to create the colour as being an issue.

No endorsement for this car yet!! I've used it on 3 DIFFERENT cars in the past. 2 Lexus's and a Mazda. Color wasn't a problem for any of those. I haven't checked for my car yet. I'm about to have a clear bra installed on the dog house and was going to try to order some for a couple of tiny chips on the leading edge of the hood. For all I know I might have the same issue.

Somewhere in the city you live in is a paint supply store that Collision repair shops buy paint from. They have a mixing station and will fix you up with a small amount of color and clear for whatever color your car is. Genesis or Chevrolet or Ford, whoever does not make paint or sell paint. If you are not aware most colors of the same brand car have 8-10 variances of color, collision shops don't just open a can and paint, It takes skill to mix colors correctly and then almost all panels are blended to match. Touch-up paint no matter the brand is a "close" match at best. But best match will come from paint store checking your code and mixing it for you.
