  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Car Buying Experience

Genesis does their ordering more like a company like Toyota vs like a company like Ford.

When you put in an order for a genesis, you get an allocation hold. So next time the dealer gets that configuration in, you get a call if youre next in line. You dont have a specific order in with Genesis, you have an order in with the dealership and they have certain allocations of vehicles. Some dealers will let you reserve a certain trim in whatever color, some wont.

This is similar to what Toyota does. Except Toyota usually just has you tell them "Ill take any of these trims of the model, in one of these several colors" and so if there is something coming in that fits that range of options, they give you a call and see if you want it. You can either pass and wait for the next time that dealership gets an allocation that matches your wants, or buy it.

Compare that to what Ford does, where you build the vehicle you want, place an order for that specific vehicle in to Fords system, and Ford schedules customer specific builds. Prices also get locked in when you order.

As far as timelines go, every manufacturer is looking at 6+ month wait times. F150s, one of the most mass produced vehicles, are anywhere from 6 months to 1year + depending on options.

Thanks, that makes sense but it doesn’t make me happy. I think Mpls doesn't get much allocation as they are a small market. The factory may not want to build my configuration, in that case I’m off to Audi

When I got mine in Feb of 22, they were not taking orders. You would look at a list of cars that were comming in and select one of them. And I was told to only select one that had a VIN Number as some did not. I had picked out a GV70 that had everything I wanted. they wanted a $2,000 deposit but it was non refundable. If the car was months late, still non refundable. So I passed and found a GV80 at another dealer on the lot and got that. I was a leftover 21 and not a 22, but I got a great deal on it.
Good luck with your hunting.

Thanks I am wiser but not happy 🙁

Well I have a very different story regarding my Genesis sales experience. My wife saw a “debadged” Genesis on the road and thought it was so stylish it must be an EV. She came home and described it to me and after a little surfing on the internet I asked if this Genesis GV80 was the car she saw. Yep, that was it, we loved it and it was last June when we started our search.

We soon realized that a GV80 was way too big and we wanted something more like our 2017 Mercedes Benz GLC300. I then started calling a few dealers in ATL and immediately realized that there were more buyers than available cars in the Genesis stable. We were especially disappointed after finding out most dealers not only wanted a fairly large deposit but also were marking up their cars from 3-5k over MSRP.

Just by chance I saw a car advertised on the internet exactly like the one we wanted at a well established family dealer not far from our house. There we met a salesman named Alan who advised that things were pretty bad GV70 inventory wise but he would put us in the queue for the car we wanted. Much to our surprise he also said no deposit was necessary and the mark up would be $0 over MSRP. He quickly added however that they would add two extras like driver and passenger window tinting ($450) and paint and interior “protection“ ($450) and that was all. I asked what would happen if we found a car somewhere else and he said “no problem” they would just sell it to someone else. We immediately admired his candor and stopped looking and started waiting for our car to come in. We no longer wanted to deal with deposits and mark ups over sticker and felt comfortable with Alan.

As the months passed we began to think we were never going to get a GV70. I didn’t want to be bugging Alan so I discovered a Genesis site that listed area inventory which included “in transit” vehicles that I have listed below for an ATL zip code.

Looked at the site every day and began noticing that the higher priced models were no longer showing up in inventory and worried if it was due to an assortment of reasons. I began seeing issues show up on this forum like eLSD and wondered if these builds needed more chips which weren’t available and Genesis was building less expensive models that needed fewer chips. Ours was the model not showing up and I began to once again think we were never ever going to get this car.

After about 3 months Alan called and said there seemed to be an unusually large shipment of cars coming in the first week of October and it was most likely our car could be in that shipment. To make a long story short our car showed up the end of October and we bought it on Halloween. We added a trailer hitch, mud guards and winter floor mats along with a cargo mat as the only other “options” to what we feel is a fully loaded car. I might add our GLC300 trade-in value plus our sales tax savings on the trade-in was in our Carvana trade-in ballpark which we though was very fair and the highest of the dealers we checked with. We preferred not to deal with Carvana and their myriad problems.

So we ended up with the car we wanted, at the lowest price around without feeling like we were being taken advantage of because of current market conditions. If you want a great car buying experience call or visit the place I bought mine and ask for Alan. BTW have purchased over 25 cars in my lifetime and this has been the best! Can not say enough about the way I was treated especially in this current economic climate. Ask for “Mark’s deal” … no just like State Farm everyone gets the same deal. LOL. Hope I haven’t broke any rules.

Your remarks apply to many car makers in the past year or two. Understand your frustration but car makers are at the mercy of suppliers, covid shutdowns, etc. My neighbor wants a particular Ford truck. It is built and sitting in a lot waiting for parts to finish it.

I don't think they are making what they want but making what they can. Normally I'd be driving a newer model but I resolves to wait another two years until the market settles down a bit. Fortunately, I like my car.

You people are very knowledgeable about the car industry so I have another question. My salesman told me he would order my specific car, I presumed from the factory but as you told me this wasn't the case. Now the car is nowhere in sight and I'm frustrated as he's trying to sell me something else. What is he thinking, why not tell me the truth ? Does he have a clue if my specific car will show up, maybe the factory will never make my specific car cause they think it won't sell. My wife thinks I should write to complain about his business practices. What do you think ?

Write to who? You don't know for sure if he ordered your specific car, just some stuff surmised by people on a forum?

Of course he is trying to sell you what he has. First time I saw that practice was when my father was buying a '59 Chevy Impala. He wanted blue and they tried so sell him a green one in the showroom. Doubt there is a dealer in America that has not tried that.

In the past someone pointed out a website that listed every car available in the country. Look for that and maybe you will find it and can have it shipped.

When I was buying another vehicle the sales person goes do you want this white one instead of the silver I was looking at. I goes is that one brand new? He says it's a demo and gives me the same price. I go but the silver one is brand new. He tells me just in case I wanted a certain color. 😂

For the Genesis I went straight for the car. I had been eyeing it like a hawk. Didn't care about the dealership experience.
