  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello everyone,

I'm considering purchasing a used car and wanted to know your thoughts on car history checks.

I've heard that services like Carfax or AutoCheck are good, but I’m wondering if anyone has experienced discrepancies or issues with these reports.

Specifically, have you ever encountered a situation where the history report didn’t match up with the car’s actual condition or background?

Are there any other trusted sources for checking a car’s history that you recommend?

I'd appreciate any tips or personal experiences before I make my final decision.

thanks in advance for any help

If a dealer services the car, good chance it is reported and in that respect, CarFax would be reliable. Many people do all or part of the service themselves. If they take the time to report it on the Genesis/Bluelink web site, it will show, but if not reported, no show. In some cases, the car may have been better serviced than the report shows.

Now that I mention it, on my last car there is one service not reported. I was leaving on a 3000 mile trip and wanted the oil changed. Dealer could not give me an appointment before by departure day. I had it done a a local shop so the record would show a gap.

CarFax data is only as reliable as the data providers, so sometimes not all information is captured, which can lead to discrepancies. The same applies to VINSCRIBE, but the risk is lower since their reports are only $12. It's a more affordable option for getting detailed vehicle history reports.

Not to mention, not all reports are accurate.

When a local shop blew up my Genesis engine and had to replace it, Carfax just showed that the service was for a "gasket and belts replacement" and an oil change. No mention that the car had the engine replaced with a used engine.

Well, it is accurate, just short on details. The Space X rocket last week had a rapid unplanned disassembly.
