car locking by self

We have a 2011 Genesis 4.6. Recently my wife has been sitting in car prior to starting it and the doors will lock. Today she put her purse (with keys inside it) on driver's seat of car, shut the door & returned her grocery cart. When she came back the car was locked & she had to walk home.

Once she turned on the heated seats and the radio came on.

The Setting for Auto Door Lock is OFF. And those are related to shift lever or speed.

I don't like these sorts of problems! Ideas? Thanks!

I have been able to reproduce this problem but not consistently. Here's my theory. If you unlock the car with either door button or remote and you do not open any door with 30 seconds the doors will automatically relock - by design. This is very consistent. BUT sometimes even when I open a door they will relock after 30 seconds. My guess is that whatever sensor is used to detect a door opening has some issues.

You are on the right track. If I start the car with remote and then unlock the passenger door, help my wife in, by the time I get to the other side they are locked again.

If I get in the car, touch the brake, the doors will not lock again until I put it in gear as that is how I set it up to lock.

Ed, so your car has an issue too, right? (Like with the passenger door switch.) Unlocking the car & opening the passenger door should tell the system not to automatically relock after 30 seconds. Could you give the following a try sometime? Start with locked car (don't bother to start it), unlock passenger door (with remote or button on handle), open passenger door, close door - then see if it relocks by self after 30 seconds or so.

Just tried it. Did not relock. Only did it when remote started.

I assume that like most cars, it is a switch in the door latch assembly. I also assume this same switch provides the signal for the interior lights and the door ajar indicator. Do those always work correctly for you?

Ed, thanks for trying that! Yes, there is a switch that the door operates as it opens & closes. I believe this operates the interior lights & also the signal that the door has been opened so as not to relock after 30 seconds.

My testing has been inconsistent. Sometimes the doors will relock even after one has been opened & closed but at other times they don't relock. That's why I think it is probably a door switch with marginal contacts. From what I have read the contacts are closed when the door is open and vice versa (contacts open when door is closed.)

Is the remote starting a standard feature on your G80 or an add on?

Thanks. This is what it is supposed to do. My case was a little different. I unlocked the car, opened the door, shut the door & then it relocked after 30 seconds. Opening the door is supposed to make it so that it does not lock after 30 seconds. Thanks for the feedback.

I would be surprised if it will relock if your keys are inside though

I think the first step for this auto lock is remote unlocking. I always park my car in the garage and it never locks itself when I leave it. My Cadillac will but not the G80.

I think you're on the right track with the door switch (black rubber booted switch on side of door frame).

Do the lights always come on when you open the door? If not that would be an indication the switch might have a short/have dirty contacts/etc.

This is a sporadic problem. I have asked my wife to note whether the lights come on whenever she opens the door.

I think all my recent testing might have cleaned those door switch contacts a little.

So far I have only tested it with the driver's door. I'm feeling quite confident that it is the door switch.
