Hey everyone! So I was driving to work in my new (to me) 2015 Hyundai Genesis V8. It’s got about 21k on it. All of a sudden, an orange car symbol with a key in the middle of it lights up and I lose power and had to pull over. Battery icon and another red symbol pop up (don’t remember which light it was). I turned it off, pressed start, and it cranked over a bit longer than usual but started up again. No warning lights and it seems to be fine now.

Anyone experience this? Is this a safety feature regarding the key fob? I remember getting a warning the first day I drove it regarding low battery, so I swapped key fobs thinking the spare one had a low battery but now I’m not so sure.

UPDATE:
I found that the battery is a basic CR2032 cell that can be purchased for pretty cheap at Walmart. I’ll pick up a set of those and replace them, hopefully that’s the issue. I’m just hoping it isn’t a deeper-rooted problem.

Def not key fob. You need to take it in for sure, sudden loss of power can be very dangerous. Def sounds electrical, start with batter and alternator. Voltages are critical on the these new cars with all the electronics.

I plan to bring it in tomorrow just in case, although I’ll be replacing both key fob batteries in the meantime just as a backup. It’s a 2015 and I doubt they’ve been replaced yet. 2 years seems to be the lifespan of those small batteries from what others had said in the forum.

Definitely was a bit dangerous! I was just cruising along and noticed my speed was dropping and the car behind me was getting closer so I pulled over before I was forced to completely stop in traffic.

Not to my knowledge, but I am not an expert on that. As far as I know, the key fob is only needed to start the car, not to keep it running.

As I hinted above, others have reported the same problem, and you can search the forum to read their posts. I have forgotten whether or not their dealers fixed the problem, and if so, what the solution was.

Thanks Mark. I have found posts regarding a similar issue but it is on the 1st Gen Genesis and they’re stating their ECS light came on as well. Regardless, I took some notes down and will mention them to the dealer tomorrow! Thanks. I’m hoping it’s something small like a loose ground or low voltage on my battery.

I was not referring to 1st generation Genesis. I don't recall those problems.

I was referring to the electrical problems with the 2015 G80. Keep looking.

Thanks. Haven’t found anything similar yet but I’ll keep on searching! I’ll update this thread too if the dealer finds any solutions tomorrow.

Like I said, I have seen at least several reports of random shut downs on a 2015 G80 posted on this forum. Try a different search criteria on Google.

Personally, I would file a complaint with the NHTSA, since that is safety issue if you are driving and the car shuts down.

Key is not needed to keep car on, it will run until u shut it off, if battery goes dead on the key fob you can still start the car by using the tip of the key fob to press on the start button this is in the manual.

Thanks for the advice, I was wondering how I’d start it in case of an emergency. My Golf had a panel I could take off and insert the key into. I barely got cracking on the manual the other day; definitely one of the thicker ones I’ve had lol.

Hopefully they can find some codes on the car tomorrow. And I’m hoping the existing warranty will cover anything! I know electrical issues can be hit or miss with the warranty.
 
Update: I replaced the batteries on the key fobs, and was able to drive around for a bit today. Checked battery voltage and it was around 12.75v. I went to get in and drive again afterwards and the car wouldn’t open, regardless of using the key fob buttons or the keyless entry button. I had to use the mechanical lock to get in the car. Tried starting it up a few times and it would start, then slowly sputter and die. Same lights would illuminate solid; immobilizer indicator, battery and oil indicator. Every time it would shut off it would give me a warning that the passenger windows were down, which they weren’t because it’s raining. I tried messing with the window switches and they wouldn’t work. Looks like it’s a deeper-rooted electrical problem.

Anyway, I’m currently waiting for Hyundai Roadside to pick my car up. I’m missing a day of work because of this. Hopefully they can help me out with the remaining warranty, considering I’m only at 21k. Hyundai Roadside said I’m still covered for the tow so that’s good. Not a good experience from less than a week of ownership!

12.75v with the car running? If so that is low, pretty sure you need to at least try a new car battery at this point or take it out and get it laod tested. New cars like this are pretty sensitive to voltages.
 
Float voltage with the engine running with a fully charged battery should be around 13.6 VDC for a glass mat battery, from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Float_voltage

To start the car with a dead fob (once you get inside with the mechanical key), push the start button with the small end of the fob.
 
Another update! Looks like it may be a lost communication issue with the fuel pump control module according to a quick scan from the dealer! Hopefully that’s all it is. It makes sense because the times that the car would start and die it seemed like it wasn’t getting enough fuel to maintain idle.

Yeah that was my thought regarding the voltage after some more time. It’s close to three years of use with the car so it wouldn’t be totally out of the question for a battery to lose some voltage by now, especially with all of the tech.

14.2 on cold start down to 13.6ish when hot is pretty normal, 12.75v while running is low. If its not getting that the alternator would need to be checked.
 
Got my car back from the dealer. They replaced the fuel pump control module under warranty. Now let’s see if I can have my new car for more than 4 days of ownership lol! I’m hoping I won’t run into any more odd problems. I’m covered for 30 more months or just under 40k more miles... I still love this car!
