I believe you're referring to this piece. Its just a protective shield for the sensor which is mounted further back.

I keep looking for this as I have seen these on Instagram. Would be a great alternative to the dark chrome that gets beaten up in the front.

The seller on eBay confirmed its an OEM grill that gets the edges wrapped in carbon fiber. I still haven't found a source for an actual carbon fiber grill (if they really exist).
