CDC continuous damping control 5.0 ultimate 2016?

Hi guy and gals,

As a previous driver, over 7 years, of two fully loaded Genesis sedans (2011 4.6, 2013 3.8), I am honing in on my NEXT Genesis.

I know the 2015 5.0 Ultimate has CDC. No 2017 models had CDC and only the 2018 Sport has CDC.

Here is the question to which I have NOT gotten a definitive answer:

Does the 2016 5.0 Ultimate have CDC?????

I would like to extend my search to both model years, but if that option was deleted for 2016 I will have to stay limited to 2015.

Do any of you know the real answer to that question???

I looked into the same question when I was looking for my car and I was told only the 2015 5.0 had it until the 2018 model. But also most dealers sales and service had and still have very limited info on the Genesis's that they are selling so don't take it as fact!

I thought only 5.0 ultimate had CDC and the new g80 sport. Its weird how the v6 ultimate forgot the fog lights and CDC makes no sense.

I believe they dropped it in 2016 model year for the following reasons:

1) When the automotive press reviewed the 2015 models (the real press, not just YouTube freelancers), they said that with the CDC on the Ultimate, that the normal setting was too soft, and the sport mode was too stiff. Also, the sport mode changed other things besides the suspension (such as transmission, etc), and could not be completely customized to only affect the suspension or transmission individually. The reviewers almost universally said they preferred the regular suspension on the 5.0 V8 trim level without the Ultimate Package.

2) It is expensive to include by the manufacturer.

3) It is very expensive to maintain (if a problem occurs) by the consumer.

No I was in negotiations for a 2015 Ultimate 5.0 but ended up going with a 2016 3.8 for mostly the reasons Mark posted below as that’s what I heard as well especially in regards to future non warranty work being very expensive.

My recollection (which could be wrong) is that the 2016 Genesis V8 was announced for the US market and was initially (for a short time) shown on the Hyundai website, but either only a few showed up or none showed up. The 2016 Genesis V8 was available in Canada throughout the year.

So to the question about CDC that started this thread.

With some direction from this forum and lots of research on my own here’s what I know.

Bottom line 1st and then explanation.

This CDC was available on the 2015 5.0 Ultimate, and then not again until the G90 and now the 2018 G80 sport.

The first generation of Equus that we saw in this country had both CDC and air springs.

Two different companies were responsible for each part of that system.

When Hyundai put the CDC in the 2015 5.0 Ultimate they used steel springs not air.

I saw at least two reporters listed online, that referred to the air suspension in the 2015 sedan. Wrong!

Hyundai has called the suspension CDC/continuous damping control, and in their manual ECS/electronically control suspension. They even refer to the ECS error in the 2016 Genesis sedan owner's manual, obviously a holdover from the 2015 manual, and no mention of CDC in any of the 2016 advertising, that I have seen.
Additional, as mentioned by another member, there may have been no V8's brought in for the 2016 model year.
It looks like he is correct. A search of two large online only retailers returns one 2016. Either it is too early to see them back off lease or..... that one is missed labeled, entirely possible.

So Hyundai's advertising calls it CDC and their technical department, ECS.

An online supplier of OEM parts calls it ECS also and the ECS shock for the rear is four times the expense of the non-electronic shock. I wasn’t brave enough to look up the price of the front shock/strut

Obviously this means I am looking for a 2015 Genesis 5.0 Ultimate.

News to me also, but the 10th digit in the VIN is G which would indicate 2016.
And the dealer website of the vehicle shows it as a 5.0
A few must have snuck through

As I mentioned previously, Hyundai Motor America did show the V8 in their early 2016 model year advertising on the Internet, but then later dropped it. So it may be correct that some were produced for the USA market before it was dropped. The 2016 V8 was available in some other markets such as Canada throughout the 2016 model year (Hyundai Canada is not part of Hyundai Motor America, and they have always had their own trim levels and packages).

Hyundai did get the 2016 5.0 V8 EPA rated (for MPG) before it was dropped from the USA market:

CDC is name used by Sachs (a brand of the ZF company in Germany) regarding their shock absorbers suspension components, which is what Genesis has used since 2009, including on the Genesis Base Trim levels.

There are various different CDC designs, many of which are passive that look like a regular shock absorber, and some are active (electronically controlled). The active ones that are available on the 2015 Genesis 5.0 Ultimate and then the 2018 G80 Sport, probably should be called ECS (which I assume is electronically controlled suspension).

The Hyundai (and now Genesis) marketing departments have created a lot of confusion on this subject over the years.

Hyundai parts link was EXTREMELY interesting!

2016 does NOT list ECS shocks. 2015 does. And although the ECS shock is about 4 time the non-ECS is about half the price of the ebay retailer.

As was stated above, Hyundai Motor America dropped the ECS on the V8 Ultimate starting in 2016 (even if there were only a few 2016 V8's sold in the USA). Most reviews of the 2015 said the ECS Sport mode was too firm and the Normal mode was too soft, and they liked the regular suspension better.
