  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I purchased a "Certified" 2018 G80 3.8 (47k miles) after my 2017 G80 was totalled by Hurricane Ida. I think the valves tap when starting for the first time each summer day. I took it in to my local Genesis dealer for another matter. I also asked them to check the valves from a cold start. I was told the tapping is due to GDI (gas direct injection) and not the valves tapping. I know my 2017 never had this tapping. Any ideas or suggestions?

Your "valve tapping" is probably cam noise at startup. You might reduce that by using different oil (0-W40?). It could likely be solved by "adjusting" the valves. This is such a major operation that no one ever does it. It's unlikely that this issue will ever cause any problem beyond the noise that is annoying you.

Thank you! What a relief. I've never heard of 0-W40. I'll ask my mechanic to use it next oil change. Thanks again!

GDI engines have a high pressure fuel pump that can make a noise that can be confused with a tappet like noise. You may very well have cold start tappet noises which for most of our engines with solid lifters is sort of normal. As valve lash clearances get larger over time the tappet noise increases. No adjustment, solid lifter replacement is required with new lifters with spec’d out dimensions to get valve lash back in spec. It’s expensive to do for top end disassembly is needed so most will sell their cars before the recommended valve lash check and replacement is needed. 60k miles for my 3.3 engine.

That sounds bad considering I bought it at 41k miles and it has 47k now. I hope the repair is covered by the New Vehicle Warranty that was extended to 6 years in service date and 75k miles because the vehicle was sold as "Certified" by dealer and confirmed by Genesis Customer Service (not dealer). Thank you very much for the additional information.

After reading that, I guess I'm glad I did purchase that 100k extended warranty.

I remember having to have this issue addressed by Nissan on warranty w/ my 350z.

Good idea. While the Certified classification extended the original Genesis warranty, I purchased an extended warranty from my credit union for $1,960 called Route 66 Easy Street with Enhanced Electronics Package (lesser of 8 years or 120,000 miles). Am I glad I did? Yes! I had the left mirror motor replaced this week. They paid the parts and labor ($1,500+) except the parts sales tax. Can you believe $1,231.00 for just the left mirror motor and parts?

You would need to have the valve lash checked. To check the valve clearance both rocker covers are removed. The optimal spec is 0.2mm for the intake valves and 0.3mm for the exhaust valves. On these engines the timing cover has to be removed to change the tappets if the specification is out of adjustment. At the dealer if not covered under Powertrain or B2B Warranty its going to be over 1,000 but It worth it if the vehicle is in otherwise good shape and you plan to keep it. While that repair takes place its a good time to have the spark plugs changed and also the water pump replaced along with the belt and tensioner as these components could be replaced without much additional labor involved
