Changing transmission fluid

Bought 2009 3.8 V6 Genesis with 106,0000 miles. I currently have 123,000 miles and I want to check the transmission fluid, however since I have 123,000 miles should I change the fluid if it still looks good (reddish color) or if the fluid is black should I just leave it alone.. Will appreciate any opinions or insights about this. Thanks

These transmissions are expensive have a transmission shop look at it. You can't really check the fluid without draining some out. Your gen genesis has the ZF tranny btw.

No problem and go to a actual Transmission shop and not a kost or a shop that does everything trust me I learned the hard way.

I assume you didn't receive any past maintenance records with the vehicle? There are few different threads about transmission servicing over the past couple of months that might be helpful.

You’re right, did not obtain any history about the vehicle, however I’m currently at 123,000 miles and the only service I have done so far is, changed the differential fluid, regular oil changes and a tune up. I also changed the valve cover gasket. Thanks for the reply, will look at those threads. Thanks..

I am at 82,000 miles and am planning on doing it myself as well. From what I've read is that it should be done around 80-100K despite Hyundai dealership saying its not a good idea. I've gotten a quote from Kia but am not sure if they pump/flush it out or do a drain and refill as Im reading that drain and refill is better than a flush.

Only problem is that (see the tread) that if you drain/refill it only replaces 4 quarts out of the 12? So you have to do the flush 3-5 times = 5 gallons of the fluid. Let me know if you find something otherwise or post on the other thread.

BTW, for the rear Diff did you use a Torque Wrench? I just hand tightened it nice and snug as I dont have one (lost and cant find it).

Hi Shahhere. Please refer to some past threads on this subject. I had my transmission drained and serviced (@ 86,000 miles) with 6 quarts even though only 4 qts came out...guessing they were overflowing it for a reason. The technician told me there isn't a method to flush these transmissions. I chose to have the service performed early because I owned a 2006 V6 Sonata and had the transmission serviced at 86,000 miles and not long after the transmission started acting up, lurching and jerking so they had to give me a brand new transmission under warranty. I used that prior knowledge with my 2014 Genesis just in case of another failure.
Once I get time, I will be draining and servicing my transmission several times after driving for several miles to flush out all of the older fluid and then drain the system (about 4 quarts). Replacing the transmission filter/pan assembly and new mounting hardware...service with 4 quarts of transmission fluid. My Genesis is currently @ 203,100 miles.

I torque everything that has a torque spec as I own several torque wrenches that are calibrated annually by Tool Testing Lab, Inc.

Could you please tell me with size bolt is removed to fill the trans fluid. Did you you use a socket wrench?
My Genesis is a 3.8L with 140k on it and this will be the first time I drain & fill. I had it flushed at 80k so were due.
What year is your genesis? I appreciate your posts!

I also have a 2009 Genesis 3.8L and love it! When you recently did your transmission fluid drain & fill, what size socket did you use to remove the fill plug? I've read a number of people have mentioned a hex key but the bolt that I've identified as the fill plug ISN't a hex key bolt. Knowing the socket size will assist me in identifying the correct bolt,

Has anyone drain and filled with this before? Does it mix well with the stock fluid inside transmission?

Thanks Jep! I've seen the equus but he did it like 7-9 times then changed the pan. Im just looming to do 1 drain and fill and leave it as is. Maybe do it once every year or 2.

When I changed mine at 100k, there was no drain and flush. Basically, remove the pan and replace it since it has the filter in it and fill with new fluid. At least that's what I think was done...
