  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

My device will not let me do a search on this forum so I apologise if questions have been previously posed.

What type of battery is in the 5.0, standard, AGM or Gel Cell?

The manual says to remove the battery before charging...Really? Why?

Head the warning about battery discharging when the car is off...don't ask how I know.

PS, I do love this car.

99.9% sure it is an AGM. I certainly would not remove it before charging but, I would leave the trunk open and be sure well vented. Just do a slow charge (not over 10amps) and you should have no issues.

Thank you Altgen.
I did charge it with the trunk open and garage door cracked.
As far as I can tell no damage was done and the charge was succesful.

I trickle charge my battery all winter on the jumper posts under the hood with no issues. I have even chared the battery overnight once with a standard charger from the jumper posts with no issues.

My 2009 owners manual says:
"Your vehicle has a maintenance-free, calcium-based battery."

An online Hyundai Parts website confirms that the same battery is used for 2009-2013, for both V6 and V8 Genesis Sedans. I am not an expert on batteries, but a quick look at some internet websites suggests that a calcium based battery is not AGM or Gel Cell.

Calcium based just means there is some calcium used in the positive and negative plates; most all maintenance free batteries use some calcium as it inhibits the loss of electrolyte over time. This is true of both flooded cell and absorbed glass mat(AGM).

Hope this helps clear up any confusion.

... I'm leaning toward the AGM answer.

The reason I asked is because my Charger has a selector for Standard, AGM and Gel Cell battries.

Thank you to all that responded to this thread.

I firmly stand behind the use of AGM batteries. The one in my Tahoe is 8 years old and cranks the truck like day one. I also have 2 very large (marine group size 31) in our SeaRay boat and they are 5 years old and perform wonderfully.

AGM technology was developed for military aircraft as they will not leak. The electrolyte is held in suspension within the mat (usually fiberglass) and even if you were to drill a hole in the case -- no leak. Also, AGM's have very low self discharge rates and they are physically far more robust than a flooded cell battery.

Good luck.:)

You might want to lift up the trunk floor and see what the battery says. It is to the right of the spare tire.

You may want to look at the 0.1%. Since the Genesis has a vent tube it would not be AGM.

I have seen the vent tube but do not know if all batts have or not have and there is no defining info in the owner's manual or the batt that specifies as to what type batt is in the car.
I appreciate your comment.

I believe the vent tube is there to satisfy the lawyers.

Seriously, if you replace with an AGM you will have no issues. They are used in many applications where no venting is possible. AGM's, being of a VRLA design do not require venting. There are some AGM's that use a safety vent in case of an overcharge condition (failed alternator voltage regulator) and my guess that is the vent tube you see. Of course, the original battery may be a flooded cell which would explain the tube.

Anyway, as I previously stated, go with the AGM and you'll have no worries.

Good luck.

No one is questioning whether an AGM battery is a good idea. The question is about what is the OEM battery, because OP said:
"The reason I asked is because my Charger has a selector for Standard, AGM and Gel Cell batteries."
It seems like it would be easy to look at the OEM battery and figure out what kind it is.

Mark:

I looked at the battery in our car and it is not labeled as to type. It is made by Global Battery of South Korea ( one of their "Rocket" line ) batteries. Just posted this as an FYI. have a good day.

Re: charging question / Battery Type?

Did anyone determine for sure whether the OEM battery is an AGM?

Might want to ask someone in the parts department next time you are at a dealer.

The V8's use an AGM battery. Total was $150 from dealer (you must give them the core).

The OEM Battery in the V6 is not an AGM but a standard battery made by GLOBAL BATTERY COMPANY.....a "Rocket Battery". I just replaced mine with an Exide L5-49x from Menards $130.30 (less 11% Menards rebate and a $10 Exide manufacturer's rebate).....net cost $105.97!
